Do I need to remove these to fit the tank?

I am pretty sure you will have to cut that out.

No experience with the early upgrade, but the later tank occupies part of that space and that would be in the way.

I like the under-seat tank and the rear AG support brackets. It's a neat quirk of the earlies. My '57 has some Bubba seat brackets in there with some high-back seats from a XJ. I'd love to go back to the OEM, but finding a decent set of early seat brackets is nigh impossible up here.

I am asking because it looks to me like an attachment point of the tub to the frame. If it is, then what would be an alternative place to attach the tub after removal? Thanks!

When I installed an early 70s rear tank into my early cj5...I did not notice any piece like you show in the pic. The rear of the tub mounted to the rear cross member...not on the inside of the frame.

Do you have emissions where you are?
Changing a gas tank could anger the enviro nazis depending your location.

As you might have seen in another thread you recently posted in...Truckee4x4 pics show the same tabs (Frame Rear Crossmember "v" Support Question). I went and looked, those tabs are on my jeep just the same as in Truckee4x4 pics...they are a body mount point, so you do need to leave them in. When I cut out the rear V-brace, I left those in place and the tanks fits under them (not really even under as the curve on the top of the tank means there is not interference). Sorry if I led you astray...from your pic a couple posts above, I was thinking those tabs were at the very rear of the frame....

If it helps any, here are some pics of mine and you can see where I cut the v-braces (not pretty) and you can also see those forward body mount tabs etc:

That was exactly the information I was looking for! And the pics on your thread and your thorough explanation will be a great help. Thanks a lot! I always ask plenty until I have a clear understanding of what has to be done before I start hacking into the jeep. I only have one! :bananatool:

I have found a good tank from a 77 cj5. Which filler neck can I use? Thanks!
BTW, I can go side or rear filler placement. I have not decided yet.

...and I will not use a skid plate, but I gladly take ideas about the strap placement and which one to use.

Alex, The filler neck from your '76 probably would be the best, and you already have all of it. This is a short cap flange/stub with a tab with two small bolt holes to fasten to the rear of the tub. The right rear fill should be simplest duplicating the factory location and all the hardware using all the stock filler hose to the tank.
Keep it simple and don't re-invent the wheel!

Funny thing, I found the tank a day after I sold my '76! Hence my search to fit it to my '62,
