Also both of those compose Timken's Set 14. I bought my last ones from Summit for a very reasonable price and they are USA made components.

There is a shaft, and a "bushing" for the nut end.

You plan on making one? Not just a matter of making a shaft, will still need to be made from 4140 or 8620 and induction heat treated and drawn, plus ground to finished size for bearing surfaces.

The shaft kit is a good deal for most when you look at the material, tooling and time it would take to reproduce.
To do it myself I would have to make 4, run the best of the lot, then wish I bought the kit.

Would the shaft need to be hardened to that degree if it no longer has bushing riding against it?

As a general rule, yes. It helps to protect the shaft from nicks and dings, keeps the bearings from gauling the shaft when put on, and also protects the thread from stretching so easily when preloading the bearings. Also makes it easier to grind the shaft to a precision finish and size.

Just out of curiosity, when heat treating a shaft like this, is the ground finish to size done before or after the heat treating?

Generally done afterwords. Most steels will warp or grow slightly during heat treat.

I don't think the AA shafts are ground or hardened and don't even know if they are alloy. I had one that was soft enough that one of the bearings actually left an indention. Thought about welding it up and regrinding but just bought another.

This is disappointing I might have to make a drawing or two.
