Looks like a good project start. we've certainly seen a lot worse condition jeeps get rebuilt on this forum.

Do yourself a favor and just DRIVE her for as long as possible... that way you have fond memories to keep you going when it's in 1000 pieces in your garage

    And the work has begun.

He went straight to the YJ spring upgrade - minus the expense of the Rocky Road kit

We went over to a buddies last night and he torch cut out the front spring hanger plates for us. Great guy who has and does it all.

His shop is complete chaos at first glance... and second and third. But he knows exactly where everything is somehow.

And then we learned how to acetylene torch cut steel. Good stuff, great guy.

Our friend has a Wrangler that he put a lot of time into, doing a wheeling trip with him this month.

Rusteze this picture from Kyle's thread speaks volumes for what's next. Gotta make some new shackle mounts. Hopefully @Norcal69 has some pics of the rear? Maybe they are identical and just turned the other way.

Changing out the springs for wider ones gives better stability and ride.

This is the fixed spring eye bracket for the front.

Rear shackle uses the stock pivot point.

@Norcal69 Is the fixed spring eye bracket for the front bolted thru the old bracket and the spring is offset towards the rear with the new bracket?

    Yes
With the RR kit, you drill a hole through the stock bracket approx 1 5/8" higher than the stock bolt location, then the bracket locates the spring eye further back.
With the RR kit you use 4 of the same springs, rears from a yj I think.

Hmm well, that many holes in your filler hose is bound to give you a small gas leak when the tank is more than half full.... That's one thing off my list.

Rusteze isn't very good at updating his thread so thought I'd help. He is still working on his YJ spring install. Today we made 4 shackle hangers, I feel like our fab skillz are improving (y)

YJ spring install progress. This is a slow process when you don't buy the kit.

    A little cleaning
    [IMG]

Front of the rear hangers tacked on in correct location. This was perfect the third time.

Cut off the rear shackle hangers since they are for 2" wide springs and then get the frame all cleaned up to weld the new ones on
    [IMG]

Apparently that 1930's grinder is heavy... and awesome!

He's committed to the shackle hanger location now
    [IMG]

Going to need a new forum name if he keeps this up

It's almost a Wrangler... in the back

New bushings all the way around
    [IMG]

Shackle hangers welded on and frame boxed around both front hangers and shackle hangers. Just need to connect the boxing together soon.

We are correcting the pinion angle for the lift this thing is getting.

This angle doesn't look so good :D

That's a really nice... well pretty nice, slab of wood I bought for some lightweight telecaster guitar bodies :susp:

Shackle angle at almost full droop (doesn't have weight of tires on it yet). That's a lot of droop . I tried to talk him into using the shorter hole on the shackle but you know how kids are, they like tall things I guess. This looks a little crazy to me, might need some limit straps or something. This thing is going to have unbelievable flex.

Shackle angle with vehicle weight. The 31" tires don't really fill up the fenderwell anymore... going to need to do something about that (like move the shackle to the lower hole :D for starters).

Hopefully the brakes can go back together this weekend, probably need longer brake lines . A little more painting and weld the perches and then... the shocks won't have enough travel... and then... Crap! have to put this back in
    [IMG]

And it's a pain. Think he will notice the nice shiny black one I have tucked away behind it? :worry:

Ok.... Been a while since I posted on here, so here is an update on what has gone on since we last September of last year.
Finished the rear spring swap and decided I wanted to drive it as much as I could and, that I would do the front when the weather became to cold to drive it anymore. So that's what I did. The last day that I drove it all stink bugged out before ripping apart the front was Thanksgiving. Then the next day this happend.

Then it wasn't until December 18th that the front axle finally made an appearance.

Darn thing made quite a mess upon its exit.

Now, finally that there was no axle in my way I could get to mocking up where the new spring mounts were going to live.

    Yep, just like that..

And that picture there is just how it sat left untouched for about 4 months..

So...... The reason that is sat for 4 months? Well... you could say that I bought a distraction.

Then I proceeded to take that apart. down to the bare frame.

Here you can see the poor Jeep in the background.

And there it is all back together.

Anyway, to get back on track from that little tangent. In April I finally decided to finish the Jeep because the weather was starting to get nice again. So in the below picture you can see that the front mounts are are already attached and the axle is in to see what my shackle angle is.

    And it wasn't to great.

So, I made this redneck template and kinda just swiveled it on the top bolt to where I wanted it to be, measured it and bam! Just like that it was pretty much perfect.

Then Muzikp sent me this link and there was no way I could pass that up. So these 35s found a new home.

And this is the way it sits. Spring swap all done and 35s on it. Looking pretty sweet!
