I've searched on here and have found a few good threads but how can I set my timing on my F-head when my crank pulley does NOT have any marks for TDC? Any advice/tricks are appreciated. Is my best bet to pull #1 plug and turn over until I feel compression or do you have another way to do it? Thanks!

there should be a small chink on the edge of the back pulley, I put a little white paint on mine yesterday when I check/set the timing on mine. I have the double pulley on mine.

I looked and looked for a long time and I can’t find a single mark on either pulley. I’ll go and look again. I can see the marks on my timing cover but I can’t find a thing on my pulleys. They don’t appear to be original.

Well, I have a F 134 and it is a perfect engine. I have forget the tricks to get the good solution, taking off a spart to get the top cylinder, use a light to have the ignition contact... checking carburetor, etc... but this engine is easy to get in good order so I am sure that you will do the right thing.

As stated there should be a notch on the back side of the pulley. The edge closest to the block.

I just crawled out from under the Jeep to make sure I wasn’t missing it but neither one of my pulleys, front or back (closest to the block) have a notch, hole, mark, nuttin. I have a FSM so I know what I should be looking for but....What’s my best plan to find TDC so I can mark my pulley and time this thing correctly?

If you can put your finger over #1 and spin it over until it blows your finger off and then go back a hair it'll get you in the ballpark but taking off the valve cover will be more useful so you can see where the valve is at. Might even help to take off the distributor cap for reference if you're unsure.

I just read an interesting suggestion on another site. Would I be able to pull #1 plug and stick a piece of copper wire down in the hole until I feel the piston and crank (by hand) until the wire stops moving up? Obviously it should be something long that does NOT fall down the hole! Would I even be able to feel the piston or is it too far offset?

Easier to pull off the valve cover. You could be tdc on exhaust stroke and that’s not where you want to be.

So if I pull off valve cover and turn the motor over until the #4 intake valve is at its highest/open point (highest part of cam), that means that #1 is closed the whole way (lowest part of the cam). Am I thinking this correctly or do you have another suggestion? I just adjusted my valves so clearances should be about right. I can go until I can fit my .018 feeler gauge in #4?? I don’t really want to open the side cover again if I don’t have to. If I’m going the complete wrong direction set me straight

Edit: I believe I said this backwards. If I get .018 on #4 then technically that’s closed the whole way and #1 is open, I think I need to just watch #1 and check clearance there, meaning it’s closed the whole way???

#1 intake will be on base circle of the cam so yep that’s right. You adjusted the valves while they’re closed right?

I followed the video on YouTube by Hannibal
with the opposing valve method. Basically with both top and side covers opened up to see the valves, when #4 was open the whole way, #1 would then be closed, so I’d adjust clearance on #1. Same with #3 and #2, back and forth, exhaust and intake.

Guy I work with has a borescope, I may try sticking that down in there and taking a look, making sure not to smash it with anything . I know that it won’t be 100% “accurate” due to dwell and such but it’s better than what I have now, which is nothing. Anyone done this before?

They used to make tools to do this exact thing. Just be sure you are on the compression stroke. Finger over the plug hole works.

Looking at the valves would tell you what stoke you are on but I can't understand how it would be precise for TDC.

So if I’d put my finger over the #1 plug hole, the only time I’d feel pressure pushing my finger off would be on compression correct? I could do this to know I’m on compression stroke then put a borescope or copper wire in there and watch or feel the piston come up to TDC. Am I thinking of this correctly?

What I would do. Even just a flashlight and a friend to rock the engine rotation by hand.

Yep. Better yet, if you have a harbor freight dial indicator with mag base, connect wire to that. Not sure if this will work through plug hole but I've found tdc on bikes with the head off.

If you mess around with the copper wire make a loop on the end bigger than the spark plug hole.

If you take #1 plug out you can see everything good enough to find TDC. Obviously if you take the other 3 plugs out it will be easier to turn the engine by hand.

I bought a cheep pulley with no marks. They are out their. I matched keyways and cut a mark on mine before install. I've used a wood pencil before to find tdc .
Ps mine runs better with timing advanced.
