9E92ABA2-4745-47FF-A882-DAC11CDC4FB4.jpeg hey, so I’m new to this forum and also new to jeeps in general, I have just purchased a 1972 Jeep cj5 6 cylinder with a 3 speed, it’s all original and I love that but I want to put a wider wheel on it and tire for sand but I also want to retain the factory hub cap, I was wondering if there was a place or somewhere I could find a wider steel wheel for my Jeep that would look factory and correct with the factory center cap. I will post a picture of my Jeep so you can see the wheel that are own it now, like I said I want to retain the look it has now I just need something wider for sand. Thank y’all for your help I’m sure I will have many more questions as I continue to own and enjoy my new Jeep!

welcome to forum . very nice looking jeep
I really like the stock look with the bias tires .
drop tire pressure down to 10-15 psi . and these tires will do good in sand

Welcome - I think your only chance for a wider wheel that accepts those hubcaps is to have wheels made. There are custom wheel companies like Stockton that will make wheels to your spec. You'd need to measure the inside diameter of the cap and give them the factory bolt pattern (5 on 5.5"), center hole diameter and backspacing. You might need to provide a set of factory Jeep wheels and have the wheel company cut the centers out and weld them in to new rims.

Sharp looking Jeep - I have never seen caps like that on an intermediate CJ. What I recall and what I've seen of caps for the CJ from this era have been turbine style, that locks into the outer rim (my 74-80 parts book agrees with this). I have caps like yours on my J10 but they do not fit the 5-lug factory CJ wheels. Maybe you have non-factory-CJ wheels and J10 caps, or these are something specific to 1970-72. Prior to 1970, the Kaiser company sold this style of "dog dish" or "moon" cap with a different script and red/gold background. RW&B would go with an AMC origin.

Love that Jeep! I hope the sand isnt a beach. Would be a shame to run that on the coast.

Welcome from Ga. Very Very nice Jeep. Have to agree with Tim. Those caps are twisting my brain.. All the same I would lower the air and NOT drive this beautiful jeep in the salty water sand.

Nice jeep. The poverty caps look great and with power available the tires aired down should work fine. As for concerns about salt and sand we run at the coast all the time with no issues IF you hit the wash rack after with a good scrub. I run 31-10.50's on 7" wide wheels 10-12 psi w/power-lock in rear and open front differential. mike

Welcome from the left coast. Before you do anything try what you have. I agree with what's been stated before; air the tires WAY down. I drive at Glamis and Pismo and I air down to about 8. You want the side wall to look like the tire is going flat. This will increase the contact area of your tires. Start off easy, once you get rolling keep rolling and stop gently. You might be suprised what you can do with those tires.

If it sees salty water fluid film before exposure and it may not rust so fast.

Thanks to all y’all a help! Like a said I’m new to the older jeeps but I’ve always loved them, this Jeep is all factory as far as I know I believer I’m the third owner, the man I got it from got it from an estate of a older lady who owned a farm near the farm I grew up on and as far as I know she got it new and it hasn’t been touched (except for maintenance) it has 110k miles on it. It has been painted around 20 years ago but it was painted the factory color. Also is there any good web sites for small hardware? Like light lenses and I want a factory handle for the passenger side on the dash and I would like a rear seat has well.

It will be on Harkers island, NC but it has a spot in the garage and will stay washed regularly and will not be getting rusty at all.

Welcome from the Florida Keys, formerly just a Cape north of you at Hatteras! I lived up there for over 30 years, and had many a Jeep rust away due to the beach driving. I still have a place up there.
I used to have the same Jeep hubcaps (only the earlier color combination of gold/orange) on a set of 8" steel rims on one of my Jeeps for a few years. Two companies made the 8" Jeep rims back before the days when white wagon wheels became available. Kelsey Hayes was the most popular rim, and was used by the factory on CJ5 Renegade l around 1970. This rim won't help you.
The other rim was made by Firestone, and there were two styles, one of which had "nubs" (I can't remember whether 3 or 4) to retain the hubcaps, and the other smooth without nubs like the KH rims. The wheels on your Jeep probably have 4 nubs, but may have 3. There are two slightly different diameter hubcaps, varying about 3/8" difference. The smaller hubcap fits the 3 nub wheel, and the larger hubcap fits the 4 nub wheel.
Anyway, the one version of the Firestone rim does have the required nubs to retain the hubcaps, but this rim is seldom seen anymore. The Firestone rims look a bit different from the KH rim in that they have a deep dish look back to the lug area, and have raised bumps between the lug holes. The KH rims have a tapered look back to the lug area, and have a smooth raised lock ring like the rims that are probably on your Jeep now.
I know I still have at least one Firestone rim, and it may be the one with the hubcap nubs, but it's up at Hatteras and I'm in Florida, so I can't check on this for a while.
The small dog dish hubcaps were a good look recessed back deep in the wheel! Finding a set of these wheels today may prove challenging. In the meantime, a set of passenger car radials in the 235/75-15 size will fit your existing rims, and when aired down to 12-14 psi, will be very effective in the sand. The least aggressive tread, the better!

    Fantastic looking Jeep! (y)
Fesser, a member here, has done a deeper wheel with baby moon caps and it looks great! See post #109 in his thread and maybe check with him and see what he did.

This. They're set up for a 10 1/8 diameter cap, if that's what you've got then they'll work.
