Lots of creative mods have been performed to our Jeeps, such as junkyard electric cooling fans, disc brakes, axle swaps, etc. Do you guys maintain a book on deviations from stock? One can think of it as "the next guy's problem" but I will admit that when I see a Jeep for sale and spy some significant deviations I become way less interested.

True. A seller is looking for a new beholder of his Jeep. Serving up a riddle of mysteries without records might not be helpful. Not to mention that everyone on this site except me is getting older and might not remember where all of these unoriginal parts came from.

Up until my current build, I've just kept all of the box tops/part numbers/notes of "special" parts in that vehicle's glove box, or with a refrigerator clippy-magnet to the inside firewall.

The one I'm working on now is going to need a spread sheet.

That is exactly how I do it, excel spread sheet. I track part numbers, compatibility, and (most depressing :() build cost.

I keep a log on each vehicle.

All maintenance, repairs, parts numbers, modifications, are noted with date and milage. I could never keep track otherwise.

with the geo disk brake conversion i am undertaking on the 62, i printed out a small sheet of paper with all of the part numbers/model for the calipers, disks, pads, hoses, fittings ETC. its laminated and in the glove box for any future owners/mechanics. thats about all ive done to maintain any type of a build record. i had to figure most of the stuff out myself, why should the next owner get a free pass?

*edit* i forgot to add a note to drill the rotor stud holes out to the appropriate size :(

I have some notes in a composition book, I do like the spreadsheet idea. I certainly can't remember all the stuff I've changed over the years that I didn't write down.

    I use a composition book.

A spreadsheet would be a good idea, though I think the notebook allows for more flexibility for your notations. Plus my work reinforces that habit.

For my 3B I originally kept a large 3 ring binder with all the part numbers used, wiring diagrams, and printed applicable portions of various TSM's. Sometime in the 90's, that transitioned to the computer and I basically have a custom TSM/parts manual for it in a Word file. Currently about 30k bytes.

Yes. Of course you can. Because you are the ONE GUY who remembers it all, and your prospective buyer is the ONE GUY who remembers everything you tell him.

FYI, the Craigslist section is loaded with links to posts by guys who will never sell their Jeep. Or their kids...
