Haha, no... It has been stuck on 75 since I have owned it, not sure if the PO broke it going downhill with a tailwind or it happened while being towed. I assume the latter. :)

An interesting note, the owner's manual I have dated 9-55 (the 1955, second edition, which includes info on the cj6) has the 0-8 black face dial on the instruments page (pg. 8 ). This is interesting because didn't the silver face survive through 56?

I don't have the original owner's manual printed in 54, maybe some else like Howard has one.

Interesting removable panel in the passenger side in that pic. I never knew CJ5s had that removable panel there. When my CJ5 was original it didnt have that.

That pic was actually of one of the prototypes that varied from the production units in a few details. That panel was a leftover from the early M38A1 which apparently had the heater mounted there. You'll also notice a foot rest by the gas pedal a'la earlier cj's & m38's that , if they made it to production at all, didn't last very long. The pic on the cover of the manual sez "Willys" on the side instead of "JEEP"

Howie, mine has the foot rest. Also interesting to note on that "prototype" is that the top bow brackets are on the windshield frame, sides and center, but the door channels are not there. I also note that it has TWO power wipers. High line prototype! Just a few perceptions.

I had to pick up the other 56 speedo from the JY yesterday. This one is a King Seeley, and I think it has the 12v external thingie that makes it 6v. I think this was used for the transition to 12V systems.

    Anyway, here it is.........

At least that is what I'm guessing it is. I need the temp gauge out of it. The needle is broken and the fuel gauge pointer is off. But I'm going to try to repair it so it's a least functional. If I can't fix the fuel gauge, I'm going to replace the temp and fuel with a 70's version 12V set and repaint the pointers white. I'm hoping the rest of the speedo pointer is in the case. I can repair that. Not perfect but back to working. And I hope to get the movement working again.

Not that I need it but I want to save it if I can.............

OK, I got it all back together. I now have a hopefully working speedo with a new fuel gauge and a refirb temp gauge. All moving parts have been lubed, adjusted and with a drilll, it seems to hold speed fairly well.

    Any questions, let me know.................

Inside with gauges installed, all painted up and ready for the speedo face....

As an aside here are some pictures of my 1952 Willys Aero speedometer. I would like to repair it and use it in my Aero if possible. I THINK one of the differences with this gauge from the CJs is that it has the extra chrome trim ring. If anyone can confirm this, please let me know. I don't have a CJ setup to compare it to. I'd like to get a new trim ring to swap out for this pitted one, but I don't think a replacement CJ speedometer would have this. I THINK the chrome ring on the CJs is what is the black ring on the Aero.

Any input on this would be appreciated.

My '55 speedometer on Tonk had a chrome outer ring, I've seen a pic of one other like that but most of them seem to have been black. There are stainless steel rings available someplace, saw one on a supply site a few weeks ago. Probably was Walck's.
