Anybody have thoughts on the Holley 600 cfm 4 bbl, and the Holley Sniper throttle body. I'm thinking ahead for the time when I rebuild my 304 soon, and was thinking of doing this, and an Edelbrock intake. The cast intake is a brute for weight. I don't run any emission stuff.

All I can say is that my 304 had a Holley on it when I got it.. Worked great on the street. Off road, not so much. I swapped in different carburetors and finally landed on TBI. Mine is GM.. I also went Edelbrock intake. But the Holley Sniper looks interesting, and is a pretty simple install. Watched a video last year or so, some hotrod magazine installed the Sniper on a blazer.. They did it in the parking lot. Seemed to work well after. I wanted a different ignition when I did mine.. So I went GM as well..

A 600 cfm is big for a 304 used in a Jeep. A 470 or 500 would be much more responsive.

Not a Holley Sniper, but a FI Tech system that's similar what we put on my brother's CJ5 to get rid of the stalling while at angles and it worked great. Need to know you're engine spec's so you can program the computer and after that it's self learning. It's not a parking lot swap though with the modifications to the fuel system. We had to modify the fuel tank / sending unit to install an in-tank fuel pump, add wiring, etc. I've heard you can get by with a fuel pump on the frame rail, but you still need a fuel return line for fuel injection or a modulating fuel pump. I haven't read good things about modulating fuel pumps lasting too long though.

I tried a few different out of the tank pump set ups. But none were satisfactory to me. I bought a 92 GM in tank pump and adapted it..

Is your want for a 4bbl driven by desire for a lighter intake? It seems jeepers sometimes go to great effort to find and adjust a 4bbl to run like a MC2100. Based only on reading the experiences of others. Ive not been smitten by the temptress of four holes so my opinion can be readily dismissed.

    My 304 set up:

    Mild cam
    Edelbrock intake
    MSD Ignition

I had a 390 cfm Holley 4bbl. It did not have enough flow for the engine. My tuner put on a 650 cfm Holley and it runs strong.

My big issue now is the smell of noxious exhaust fumes. Speed shop swears it is tuned perfectly. I am going to switch to Sniper EFI. They have a set up without a return fuel line.

Keep us posted on what you go with!

Should be a return line already there. If not it is easy to run. I upgraded my fuel line when I did TBI and used the old fuel line for a return.

Fuel injection is the best for a trail-driven vehicle. Lacking that, the 2V OEM Motorcraft 2100 has a reputation as one of the best carburetors for the trail. The 4V Rochester Quadrajet is also excellent, but availability and complexity might be an issue. The 4V OEM Motorcraft 4300 and 4350 used in Wagoneers are also good, but you will have trouble finding a 4300 in good condition (not warped) and the 4350 is an oddball base pattern that requires a hard-to-find base adapter. The street Holleys have a bunch of issues on the trail; I would not start there. For new carburetors, the Holley TA or Edelbrock (Carter AFB repop) seem to be the main choices. The Edelbrock has an off-road kit (?) with spring-damped floats, and the TA is made for use on the trail.

If weight is your main concern, you can put a 4V-2V adapter on the aluminum manifold and run the original 2100 carb.

A friend with a 304 went with the sniper 4 bbl, dumped too much fuel and returned it for the 2bbl. Working as it should now.
Personally I chose GM FI over sniper.

If its weight you're concerned about, I agree with Tim, change the manifold and keep the 2bbl with an adaptor. The MC2100 works great off road with a float spring, fuel pressure regulator, and maybe a slightly lowered float level. Add a modern HEI or TFI and its almost as good as fuel injection. This is my set up, and it works great.

If you're going for HP and already rebuilding the engine, then don't bother rebuilding the 304, get a 360 (or a 401) and add a nice Holley truck avenger.

The MC2100 I had was sufficient on trail. still it had Carburetor issues.. TBI, is a turn the key, start and walk away.

Some, in the cycle community at least, say the advantage and disadvantage of EFI is that one can get on and go without needing, or allowing, the engine to warm up at all.

If you like.. Start and take off. I let mine warm and idle down a bit first.

. I went to TbI 4 years ago and i love it. But i always tought that MC2100 was good carbyrator until 2 day ago when facebook bring me an old video of me with the mc2100 trying to get over some rock and stalling the engine and having a hard time to restart the engine.
