Wow. How did you do the shaping of the sheet metal in the upper portion of the mount?

 

Here's my template next to the backside of the piece, where I didn't grind the welds smooth. I bent the 38° V down the middle, then cut the notches, then bent them closed with a pair of pliers. After some fine-tuning with a grinder and a cutoff wheel, they fit in there pretty well. I got in there to clean up the welds with old worn-out tiny grinding wheels.

 

Real nice! Slick way of doing it.

 

You need to be my neighbor so u can make cool stuff, then come use my dimple dies and press to make it cooler and stiffer!

 

I needed an excuse to restock my supply of giant fender washers.

I saved the fuel filler recess when I chopped this body up for the sole purpose of reusing it on the rear corner like this.



I'm not sure how I like how big it looks, and I don't need that big of a hole. Whats the general opinion from you guys? I'm leaning towards making a new one of the same design to keep a tribute to the old, just smaller.

I could just cut the flange off of this one and blend it into the body?

The narrower square ones from the later years are just too... AMC.

 

If it were me, I’d reuse the old. I really like repurposing things where ever possible! That said, it is a little big... but I’d still use it.

 

If you don't need that big of a hole, build a scaled down version.
I just built a piece like that for my passenger side tank.

 

I went with a late CJ filler neck. When the cap is on it covers the screws.

I believe I sent you the tank and neck from the above CJ.

Cut the flange off and French it in. ( that’s the fancy bodyguy term for the flush look on a recessed opening)

 

I like to repurpose also. Call it different, unique, whatever

 

I see you are controlling the fuel temperature. Lol. Just kidding. Neat idea of repurposed fuel can.

 

It is big, but I would still run it in it's full glory!

This should make jeep people do a double take when they see it. A driver's side offset rear axle.



This was the first time I threw one of my 15" wheels on this axle. I was convinced they wouldn't fit, since Rodeos were stock with 16" wheels, but they fit!! Yes! Now a tire and wheel purchase can be but on the back burner.

I had to temporarily swap in the Rodeo axle so I could make a mock-up fuel tank. I loaded the rear end with rocks to squat the rear suspension.



I spent half my day today making this cardboard gas tank. This is version #9, and I'm finally happy with it. I did the math, and it should be 11.4 gallons. The bottom is facing us, the front is up. The recess will allow the axle to travel up into that area.



Time to start chopping and welding!

 

I can't wait to see if you cut pieces of metal matching each of the cardboard pieces and weld them into a tank or if you cut larger pieces of metal and bend them. If this was a Discovery Channel show, you'd send the tacked together tank "out for paint" and it'd come back beautifully smooth and spectacularly painted and ready to mount on a chopper. That's the part of the show I'd like to see -- transforming a tacked together tank into a work of art. They never show that. Hopefully, we'll get to see your pictures.
