I have 66, V 6 drive train in my 64, trans, transfer, axels, speedometer, and 750 X 15" tires and a F 134 motor. I can top out at 60mph, but don't do it very often. I can cruise at 50- 55 no problem. I think I read here that if the Jeep came with the 16" tires it had 5:38 gears, if it came with 15" tires it came with 4:27 gears.

Yes, very. But I ha ve the Pertronics and sometimes it gets jumpy. Not all the time so I called. Their tech said all I need to do is add the wire adapter to solve it. Got the part on my bench just waiting to add.

I mounted mine on using one of the dash bolts next to the windshield clamp to the left of the steering column. Not at home right now if you want a pic, I can do when get back.

Let me first preface the answer with my thread on this process (My Geo Tracker Disc Conversion Experience), and post 31 basically answers it.

But now that I have had more time with it, it IS better than the factory but less than I was expecting. I also have a 55 wagon which came with 11" drums all the way around but are not self adjusting. My original game plan was to do same on it. In fact I had already ordered the Geo rotors. But the wife was not happy with the CJ result, even saying she would not drive it unless an emergency, and I understand. So I returned the rotors and have decided to go the all 11" Bendix self adjusting on all 4 corners. Then if I, or she, is not happy, I'll add Herm's hydrovac to get the easier feel. If I like that setup, I'll add it to the CJ. I am glad in one way with the Geo in that it will be the one I take on mountain trails and if I happen to go thru a creek, I won't worry about the water fade. The wagon is going to be more of a nice paint and show so I'm not sure I would want to worry about scratches. But all is subject to change at a moments notice or a wim.

I have 66 V6 axels on my Jeep with 2" x10" brakes, can't lock up the tires, but it stops good. I am in the process of buying a set of 11" brakes to put on the front, just for piece of mind. I very seldom go over 50mph, so it doesn't take a lot of brake to stop a 2,500 pound car from 50mph, but I will feel better with a little bigger brakes.

I have taken my m38a1 up to 60 mph & it sounds like a banshee. 40 sounds comfortable to my engine. I actually don’t feel safe at higher speeds. It’s old.

The best way to lower your cruise RPM is to add a Saturn Overdrive to your transfer case. I have a '57 CJ5 with stock F134 engine, T90 tranny, T18 transfer case and axles with 5.38 gears and original 16" wheels and military tires. Where I live there is a dual-lane highway that one just about HAS to travel on to get anywhere, so I knew I wanted to be able to run at least closer to highway speeds in relative safety without taxing the engine. With that in mind, when I rebuilt it I replaced the original antique 9" brakes with more modern 11" drums for added stopping safety, and added the Saturn overdrive unit to the transfer case. What I liked about the overdrive is that it was simple to install, I didn't have to modify the floor of the truck to install the shifter, if it breaks the truck is still driveable, and I could return the truck to stock easily if desired. The 25% overdrive effectively changes the 5.38 gears into 4.03 gears, which are much easier to live with on the highway. The other great benefit to the OD unit is that you can use it to split every gear, including reverse, if you want to. It gives you 6 forward speeds and two reverse speeds in both high and low range, which makes your vehicle more versatile when off-roading. If you have an early stock CJ and want to drive it on the highway at close to highway speeds, the overdrive is a great addition to your Jeep, helps to reduce the wear and tear on your engine at highway speeds, and also provides the benefit of gear-splitting when driving off road as well.
