Holley ta470, the Edelbrock is a Carter AFB knock off which is notoriously bad off road.

    Thanks Rich,
How bad are these carbs on road. Unfortunately, my jeep will see a lot more highway than rock. Mine will see mostly back roads and forest service roads.

Thats where it will be the worst on rough roads. Fuel sloshes out of the bowls and stumbling and dying is prevalent. They make some off road parts for them. I never tried it but feedback is they really don't improve much.

The even fire is easy to FI :cool:with pull it yard GM stuff. Just saying....:poke:

Some people run them. They need a bunch of mods to perform their best off the pavement. Raise the bowl vents, spring loaded floats, vent and jet baffles, others I can't think of. Lots written about this if you search. Typically they flood out on hills and over broken terrain (bouncing) if not modified.

Generally considered that the best junk yard off-road carbs are the Motorcraft 21xx and the Rochester Quadrajets. IIRC Nick was running a Rochester DualJet on one of his V6s, but I know little about them. The Motorcraft 4300 that came on Wagoneers is decent too if you can find a good one, but not many of them in good condition out there. I'd say the 4350 also, but it's an oddball pattern. The Wagoneer guys used to run the Quadrajets pretty often, but I think availability is not great today, and they have a reputation for being complicated.

I ran the TA470 prior to going EFI. I started with Holley 390s, tried Edelbrock 500s and of the carbs for both on and off road, the TA470 was the best option I found. It was 'almost' good enough to not go EFI, but since going EFI, there is no way I would go back to carbs.

And there's the challenge. You need to mesh the gears in the correct angle, while also engaging with the oil pump gear. Youll need to pay mind to the orientation of the dist gear blade, and also the corresponding slot on the oil pump shaft. Use a long screwdriver to play with the oil pump shaft until you hit the sweet spot.

All the more difficult because of the helical gear twist.

Getting the dist. to mesh in the cam gear and oil pump is not my problem. Trying to find the sweet spot for the housing to work out and not hit anything is the issue. I can get it to go together, but I have very little range of movement to adjust timing. I have found a spot that works, and is close for now. I will check a little closer when I get a carb on it that I like and plan to keep.
I am considering the Holley 8007

    Thanks Rich,
Your pic shows almost exactly where my dist. needs to set. I will get a side inlet vacuum can.
About the Truck Avenger carb., the specs on the Summit site says, "not for street use or towing". Is this carb usable on the street.
My 3B will see probably 75% street and 25% light trail use. I have read good things about it for the extreme off road situations. Just want something that is drivable on the road and in traffic.
I certainly appreciate your patience and willingness to help.
    Tim

It's fine. Still a vacuum secondary so it won't give any more than the engine will take. Fully tunable as far as jets etc. I think the off road use thing is cya stuff.

As stated - the TA470 works fine on the street, or anywhere else for that matter - the disclaimer is mostly for CA so they didn't have to do the 'smog BS' required for there and also I don't think I would use it for a 'street' car running 1/8 or 1/4 mile sprints. The main push for me to the EFI from it was the wife and where we went with the jeep. There were a couple places even the TA470 had issues where I did fine, but she said she would not be comfortable driving if I couldn't.

Thanks Guys, it will probably get a ta470 since y'all said that. I guess I should have been reading between the lines, instead of reading the lines huh.
    thanks

3b - I have to same hei/vac problem as you. I spent quite a bit of time looking for vac can specs and found a few that would probably have about the right amount of advance but I never have found the right angle type. All of the adjustables are straight.
Perhaps grinding more on the head would make it possible to rotate the dist to a better position (this hasn’t worked for me yet).
Another idea would be to move the vac fitting to the side on the one you have. Drill a new hole and solder on the little pipe, then plug the original one on the end. Without damaging the diaphragm inside the canister. Maybe someone has figured out how to do that and could offer the service to others.
    Just brainstorming.

Those will work pretty good - I've run them in the past. You don't get the curve 'exactly right' but I think they come close. If you work with the weights for the mechanical as well, it could be a real good solution if you can't find a spot to make the other work.
