Yes please keep that paint!!!! I bet with some rubbing compound and buffing it will come back to look great. Its only original once... can't wait to see more progress.

    Outstanding build!

Where did you source a new Chevy 4.3?

    Great thread. (y)

+3 on keeping the paint as-is. I'd also buff and wax it but leave any scars as-is, plus do any minor rust treatment to keep it from getting worse.

"Patina" (or is it decrepit?) is nice but I like shiny, maintained patina.

Well I’ve been slowly picking away on getting things figured out on the Jeep. Last weekend I cut an inch off of the front factory crossmember to make room for the radiator to clear the hood.

I made a piece to fit back on top out of 1/4”

Welded and ground it down to make it look pretty again.

I need to weld my shackle hangers on and some other nuts and stuff for the xfer case crossmember and I think I’m ready for some paint on the frame! Oh, and I got a new toolbox to replace my old particle board work bench, much more organized and easier to find what I’m looking for!

I’m going back and forth on my power steering. I purchased Herms kit a while back thinking it was going to be the way to go. Now that I have it mocked up I don’t really like how low the pitman arm sits above the axle. I will still be removing the truss the PO installed so disregard that. Only 5-1/2” above the axle tube!
On a left turn, at full lock, articulated seems like it could be an issue.

The other problem is clearance with the power steering pump and pulley. I can get it forward another inch or so but still going to be cutting it close.

I think I’ll get a Saginaw box and see how that fits up front. I guess these are the joys of customizing a Jeep!

I moved mine around a lot before I settled on a spot for it.

I cut a hole in the factory cross member (4 in pipe fit nicely) and as I mock it a little more toward where the steering wheel is, I may have to also notch the factory motor mount.

"custom" is certainly the design when you start.

Well I got some time off work this week so I went to work on the Jeep.

I disassembled everything I had mocked up and welded a few last parts.

    D605A08A-24C5-4376-B533-2089CC9F5586.jpeg

I scuffed up the frame and took off what little surface rust had developed, wiped it down very well with acetone, then I treated it with Ospho to take care of any hidden rust. Let it dry and then brushed off any remaining residue from the Ospho.

I treated the inside of the frame with Eastwood internal frame coating as Steve’s 70-5 mentioned before, it took 2 cans and got good coverage throughout. The stuff is a bit messy but I taped any holes I wouldn’t be spraying through and covered the garage floor and myself pretty well. Then I primed and painted the rest of it with Eastwood products as well.

I also got the front axle painted and a new set of shoes!

I should of use those headers on mine. Sanderson's CV95 Headers?

Do I see that right. Are you missing the knock sensors in the heads?

I had to laugh when I read this part. I used the same stuff in January of 2016 and had this to say about it...
"If I were to use it again, I would definitely haul the frame outside. I ended up with black splatter on two walls that were six feet away from the frame. The stuff is also really thin so if you spray it heavy be prepared to have it dripping all over the floor. It dries really quickly though."
You are doing really nice work on this Jeep. Keep it up.

Hey Scott, yes they are cv95 headers. Did you use the rear dump? Wondering if that gives more clearance for steering. And yes no knock sensor yet.

Haha, I read that before I did it! Glad I got the warnings before hand. It is definitely messy stuff!

{I should of use those headers} I used the factory passenger side from the S-10 and a drivers side from a Astro Van. I had to modify the stock drivers manifold, it doesn't fit to well.

    Clearance. Not really.

Got the body put back on so I can build the roll cage and see how the Corbeau seats are going to mount/fit and if I have to notch the wheel wells. I asked for some time off of work so I can make this my full time job for a few weeks while it’s a little slow. Hoping to get a good jump on my progress in that time and maybe even get this thing fired up! 5C8B3981-CA0F-437E-9520-04CA899D4532.jpeg

Got the roll cage all tacked together and ready for welding.

    FF46037E-36A1-4A6F-8521-0CFF3142C0D5.jpeg

Also notched the wheel wells back three inches, thought I’d be able to reuse the part I cut out but the cutoff wheel took a little too much material so I made my own replacement panels.

Spent the weekend prepping the undercarriage and inside the tub for paint and monstaliner.
