    Hi All,

I actually have a CJ3a I am trying to "restore", I have come here because I have a CJ5 question I hope you will be able to help me with. Last week I pulled the rear wheels and discovered that my CJ3a Drums where not like all of the youtube videos I had watched. After a couple of hours of internet researching I discovered that I have, at least I think I have, 10 inch drums and brakes off of a early CJ5. Wheel Cylinder at the top middle and a total of 2 Springs on top, 1 Spring on the bottom and the shoes held in with clips.

My question is first are these truly CJ5 brakes and if so did the CJ5 emergency brake come of the drive train like the CJ3 did or would I be able to add a emergency brake cable to this set up.... The Drive train brake was removed years ago, I assume, and only the backing plate remains. I would prefer to add a cable to the rear brakes if possible, I know not original but neither is my electric fuel pump. I am working under a tight budget and trying to do the best I can with what I have.

I thank you for any help you can provide....

    Ardan..

At this point, if you have nothing but the backing plates, I would encourage you to consider shifting to the 11" brakes. You'll need new backing plates, but the individual components will be considerably less expensive and you can add the cabling for the parking brakes - although you should have the driveshaft mounted brake on the back of the transfer case.

posting a picture of of your brake set-up would probably help with identification...

As mentioned, these are almost certainly Wagner 10" brakes from '71 or earlier CJ-5. These Jeeps used the transfer case mounted parking brake like your 3A, and so there was no provision for a parking brake on the rear wheels. The later 11" Bendix brakes used on later CJs were used on a lot of vehicles and parts are a lot more available and cheap compared to the Wagners. The Bendix brakes are less plentiful in the yards than they were a couple decades ago, and you might want to consider other brake options, like the Geo/Suzuki disks discussed in another thread here.

    First post! Welcome from Boston.

This is a CJ 10" brake. They're easy to identify by the rod actuated self adjuters, most vehicles use a cable for this.

Also as a general rule these wheel cylinders will have Lockheed cast into them as Wagner was a division of Lockheed in those days.

67-71 Jeepster Commandos have these 10" brakes with parking brake provision on the rear.

If there's a manual star wheel on the adjuster, you most likely have 9" brakes.

You may be right, but I did measure the drum width and it was 10 inches across, it does have the manual star adjuster, and the wheel cylinders do say Lockheed-Wagner on them. they also have the clips like in the picture above...

Now I can't wait to I get off work to go home and check, I have the pictures on my camera at home......

Not all 10" brakes are self adjusting, only the later ones. The 10" brakes on my '67 do not have the self adjusting mechanism.

If you did not know, the only dimension that matters is the diameter inside the drum, from shoe surface to shoe surface. The outside diameter of the drum is not relevant.

    Hi Guys,

My pictures aint' great but I will post them here, The inside diameter of the drum is 10 inches. I am afraid it is manual adjust and no possibility of an e-brake....

You might want to check what gears that axle has. Most of the '70/'71 flanged axles were 3.73 gears. Either way, make sure your front axle gears match the rear gears.
I see you say this axle is in a 3A. Does this still have the L134 engine? If you have 3.73 gears, and the L134, that flathead might have some difficulty pulling those gears.
