HEI, practically no maintenance after installation. I highly recommend AC Delco modules. I also have an MSD 6 Model 6246 made for oddfire v6's, I'd like to know how to wire it for "selective" use' Good luck!

I have two ignition coils. One is wired normally (not from the MSD) and the other is wired with the MSD....With a switch to switch between the two.

Hello any and all! I've got a '69 dauntless, all original, even the wires look original, lol. Prestolite is still in place so I'm going to the scrap yard today that should have some buick odd or even fire HEI's. I've been reading as much info as I can here and at off-road.com. Before I go can someone just clarify exactly what I'm taking from the car? I know the difference between odd and even and how to convert if needed. Is it just the distributor complete assembly, maybe a connector, and I'm looking for a torx head bolt to match my intake bolt? Is there a module or anything else external to the dizzy assy that I need to grab as well?

    Thanking in advance!

@47v6 , sounds good. With that, plus coil and coil cover, skyhawk plugs (someone mentioned a plug and gap difference for odd-fire HEI?), performance wires and a button head bolt am I good to go? Anything else?

    Thanks

You can use whatever plugs you normally do but open the gap to something like .065. I could be wrong and that seems awful wide, but that's the number in my head. I didn't use performance wires, just stock from the skyhawk. The ignition module these reman units come with are garbage. Buy a spare, make SURE ITS BUICK. not Pontiac or Chevy or whatever. It will someday just not start for no reason, its the reman ignition module. Replace with a good name brand one specified for BUICK and you most likely won't have that issue again. Make SURE you use heat transfer paste when you put the new one in.

There is also DUI who makes distributors at a premium so that you don't need to grind the intake to get the distributor housing to clear.. DUI HEI Distributor Buick Dauntless Odd-Fire 225 V6 USA Made!
I did say it was a premium price.

I have the Pertronix in my 225 powered CJ6 as well. Been in there for a number of years now and I drive the daylights out of it. I love it, works great for me.

With. I keep a wire zip tied to the mount with the proper ends to bypass the ballast if it ever goes bad.

I got the HEI dizzy from Rock today, and the coil and cap, anything special I should know before assembly? It looks like the red wire off the coil wants to mate with the yellow from the dizzy, and coil white with dizzy red. Is that right? the black off the coil has an eye terminal, where should that go?

I've run both the GM odd-fire HEI and the MSD 6246. They both work flawlessly and are quite dependable. The HEI probably edges out the MSD because of module availability at most parts stores, but does require the button head screw and slight trimming to fit. They both fire up the engine instantly on moist humid days.

Do I cross the coil wires as this post seems to suggest? :

    HEI's EXPOSED

Crossing the wires from the coil I ordered seems to make the terminals fit properly at the cap. Crossing sends the White coil wire to B+ and the Red coil wire to the Yellow distributor wire...

@47v6 's link for general GM V8 HEI shows the wires uncrossed, red to red and white to yellow but am I mistaken in thinking this only applies to even-fire and the coil wires are crossed for odd-fire installation?

Pretty sure that's what I did.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I need a new distributor. The above link shows 3 and to my eye the D2000 looks like what I want. Do I need to replace the coil as well? Are there any other bits I need to replace (ballast, plug wires and coil wire are all less than 5 yo).
