Axle Upgrade Opinions?

I want to upgrade my rear axle to full floating shafts. I have the original 19 spline Dana 44 in my 68', with a Power Lok. Herm's kit runs around 1K. I'd put in a Power Lok rebuild kit as well. I imagine with shipping etc, this probably comes to 1300 bucks. Then I'd have to do the work, which is no big deal, but of course time is valuable to me.

BUT....

I'm considering another already built axle; a direct fit Dana 44 with 30 spline full float shafts, the proper gears, and an ARB air locker. Used, but good shape, so I understand. Don't know price but not much more expensive.

---I really like my Power Loks. But I once had an ARB in a truck and had no issues with it. I was going to avoid the ARB due to potential trail failures, but am reconsidering.

Any thoughts or opinions welcome. Thanks in advance....

 

I'd go selectable over LSD any day.

Plus the 30 spline housing should be more stout than the original 19 spline housing. Bigger tubes.

 

I put about 100,000 miles on a TJ with a 44 rear and a 30 front diff. Both had a ARB and never had one problem.

 

Thanks for the replies guys. I know the ARB's are good units. So I should probably calm down about the reliability of it. Looks like I can pick it up for 1400. Its rebuilt with new r&p gears, bearings, FF chromalloy axle shafts. Its got 2.75" tubes. 11" Drums.

Now I just have to wait for a weather window and for the passes to open. Bugger of a winter this year.

Since I'll have to plumb air, I guess I should think about putting one in the front end now too.
