    x2 on the compression test.
I had an F head that would start and run okay but had no power. It had trouble pulling an easy hill on my street in second. Compression test showed cylinders 2 and 3 had bad compression. Found out head gasket blown out between number 2 & 3. Found a small note in the FSM that helped.
As stated in this forum many times get an FSM (factory service manual).

just reminded me of a similar post from a few years ago...could there be confusion between an OD shifter and a TC shifter. Maybe the OP is shifting the OD thinking its the TC, and the TC is still in low range? Not sure a cj could make it to 30mph in low range? Check for 3 shifters - the TC shifter is pretty far up under the dash on the passenger side of the tunnel.

Just barely but the engine would be screaming, not bucking.

I believe a 65 would still have the dual stick transfer case.

Check the valves. Nearly every FHead I've come across needed the valves to be adjusted. Some badly. It's free and takes just a few minutes.

    Nole,

Post some pictures of your shifters and a picture of the exterior. I think that might help determine what you have.

Do I need that timing light to check the timing? Not exactly sure how to do it but I'll figure it out. And how do I go about checking the fuel flow? Thanks though, lists are always helpful.

There's no tach so I'm not positive of the RPMs. How do I check if the clutch is slipping? It feels right to me.

Okay! But no, they're pretty small tires. Nothing huge.

Frozen or dragging brake(s)? Will it roll easily in neutral?

Ignition timing, point gap, etc? Cap and rotor? Plugs?

Any diagnosis should start with a systematic tune-up to basic factory specifications.

Single stick made its appearance early in the '64 model year, but many have been converted back to twin stick.

Yes a timing light is mandatory, usually you can find used ones for sale cheap. For fuel flow I believe there's a test mentioned in the Factory Service manual, which is of course, the FIRST THING YOU"RE GOING TO BUY. :)

While searching for the timing light also keep an eye open for a dwell meter, usefull for setting dwell angle or ignition points gap which boils down to the same thing.
