Kid Back Seat Question

    This is what I did when my kids were small....the car seat was strapped in with the lap belt, but I also added a tie down loop to the floor behind the rear seat so I could run a tether strap to the top of the child seat.

    I wont having more than 2 kid....i going on jan 4 to get the family chanel to get cut so....



    Ahah i know what you're talking about, there a lot a stupid thing i have done like those mention. But since wehre i live is more opression than real security i want to be as legal as possible....i wont like to to pull over by a cops and get the jeep tow and find a way to get back home with kit overnight....

    That setup is exponentially better than any manufactured child seat. Those belts are made to a very high standard, well above any seat made in china with a blanket "standard". Arguable that cage and belt setup is many times safer than any "car".

    One of the man problems in any society is where people lose any sense of reality and just go by whatever law is written with mandatory judgements passed about without any logical thought process.

    To me, if find it absolutely ludicrous where I live thats its perfectly legal to ride a bike with a child or 2 in a trailer towed behind it on main roads with nary a helmet. Not that that would help anybody if a car ran into them, But putting a child in the backseat of a modern vehicle with side curtain airbags and other safety systems not in a booster seat or safety seat going 35mph or below is illegal.

    So, safety is not a concern if you're being "green" and not using fossil fuels to transport children, but if you do, a whole other set of standards apply? Don't get me wrong, I am all about "green" energy, but sometimes it gets in the way of reality and creates a different set of standards that some conveniently ignore.

    I agree to all you said....i know those mastercraft seat of the perfect thing for kid safety....but for those who are behind a computer at our gouverment you cannot argue with them....what is written on the sheet must be the only legal thing regardless what reality is....

    Just to let you know....just to titlte a sport bike over 500 cc here in quebec it cost 1600 $ (around 1300$ usd) just to to license the bike at our gouvernement each year. And that you have around the same amount for insurance. So it cost around 3000$ buck before turning the key on for a 4-5 month of activity (we have 7-8 winter month that no bike is allowed to ride)....it tell you how much repressive are the law over here in quebec....

    side note..

    the ride is so smooth and comfy back there my 5 year old was able to fall asleep on a 95 deg day in the sun for a 1 hr ride back home from the lake

    i would like to say a huge thank you to all the input you guys bring me....i'm still in confusion but it's good sometime to get opinion from other even if it's not what you like to hear. This forum is so nice for that kind of information and interaction from other.

    I'm not closing the thread so if other have something to say feel free all comment and suggestion is always welcome.

    Wow...........I knew this subject would somehow get off the reservation............

    It's Kids were talking about Right?.........and again there little bodies and muscles that are pretty fragile..........Notwithstanding all the adults in the room also have a similar risk.

    Jeeps are nothing more than a Tin Can on wheels with hardly any protection in any direction.........I'm sure all of us while even on the easiest trail have hit a rut or rock that resulted in a quick jerk that also resulted in hitting your head on the roll bar or other item...............And Yes we all think were engineers when it comes to safety and roll bars and attachment points but that's a different subject for a different day! ....................And Yes , Modern vehicles have come along way in protection and Airbag technology.

    I've spent most of my life going 200 + mph in the 1/4........from the days of wearing a T-shirt , lap belt and a borrowed helmet going 12 seconds to now wearing a SFI compliant Fire suit , boots , 5-6 point harness that restricts movement of arms , body , and head with the use of a Hans device and even a onboard fire system................

    I know what your already going to say is that my Jeep will never go 200 mph or for that matter even a 100 mph so therefore I'm exempt from using all that Race Car shixt ..........But the reality is you can be just as dead or injured at 5 mph in your Jeep as you can be at 200 mph.

    Restraint systems do just that..........when properly installed , used and tightened.......... they will restrain the body from movement or escaping the vehicle do to a frontal , side or rear impact........But, Fact is that most car injuries are not from escaping the vehicle PurSe but , more so categorized around the broad term of "Whiplash" or hyperextension where a body in motion is always at risk! And Kids do to there underdeveloped bodies and muscle systems and especially their necks and heads are at a greater risk for lasting injuries............Hence the reason Air Bags have found there way into our daily life and a $1200 SFI certified Hans device has found its way into my other life!

    I know we all try to drive like little old ladies when the kids are strapped in..........but that doesn't protect you from the crazy in the next lane! or the dude that just ran the Red light! So think about your Kids restraint systems to keep their arms inboard and there necks and heads restrained ......Nothing else really matters........Period! Cause no one can predict when the next accident will happen!

    Not trying to change anyone's minds on safety just trying to raise the awareness factor.........

    That's why i want to put modern stuff under the body of the Cj6...running a modern frame with teraflex suspension (for example) is just the same as buying a jeep TJ for me....
    My ultimate goal is to have an old school jeep but with all the modern technologies.

    Nothing is 100% safe. Every day we live we take a chance that we or our loved ones wont survive. The reality is, none of us will make it out alive. We always want to do whats best and safest for our families, but that may not always be what the spice of life is about. Danger and perceived danger is what most of us see as fun or "living". If this were not the case no one would drive a vehicle 200MPH or faster, or ever climb mountains, or go to the moon.

    Freak accidents cannot always be accounted for and living like they can make life miserable for most people. Once my sons were old enough to make reasonable decisions for their safety, I stopped making them for them. Want to ride your dirt bike up that hill? Go for it!

    I know this thread is about how to best PROTECT your children from your own decisions of driving with them in jeep, but there is a bit more in my mind about this as a father of 3 sons, 2 who are teenagers.

    The best lessons in life are the failures you walk away from. As I get older, I realize that keeping them safe is a disservice to them. Who am i to take away their right to make stupid decisions like I did? Who am I to take away their right to learn from their own mistakes. Why should I be the "patriarchial" authority that shows them the "right" way ? How arrogant of me to think that I always know best. How on earth will they learn to live with their wits if I treat them as a nitwit, disrespect their right to be or grow into adults and never let them develop the wits and "common sense" to develop into real men. I would say women, but I have no daughters.

    Parenting and watching your children fail is not for the feint of heart, but it may be the answer to so many peoples opinion that the latest generation is no match for those before it. If we take away all their responsibility for their own actions, we hobble them and create dependent adult children who cannot make a decision to literally save their life.

    I totaly agreed on that....i'm now consediring option about the future of jeeping.

    I never stated that i will do extreme trail...that i'm my case is already done and i'm looking way more in spending guality time with my family and doing it in a safe way.

    But as you said overprotecting them is the same as not protecting them at all....you need to find the right balance between the two....

    I think there is a common sense approach / balance to kids overall safety be it riding in vehicles or skiing down a slope and that is perhaps garnered by age , aptitude and individual experience...........as we have all seen the little 5 year old buzz by on the slopes or on a bike with his hair on fire!! Keeping in mind that no two kids will properly be the same intellectually as there age may warrant..........and that's where parenting probably comes in.


    Chris , I'm not sure I can agree with you here..........I've never strapped myself in thinking of Danger or perhaps of getting a Rush ..................Yes, I have a need for Speed but more so about cheating the clock by a few thousands under varied conditions along with the mechanical nature of all that goes into making it go fast......That in my book is more of a challenge or maybe some Ego much like someone climbing a mountain or going for a ride on a Rocket............Danger is perceived in almost everything we do , but leaving anything on the table as far as survival & safety is concerned just never happens.....

    Now again my common disclaimer is I'm not trying to change anyone's mind on there Safety...............

    We are building a back seat right now for Steve's 71 project. It is being built as a seat base with no cushion to accept car seats with side supports. He is using the side support car seats to keep the kids heads from being able to hit together.
    On the sides of the roll cage we are adding race car type window nets to keep their hands inside the cage in the event of a roll over. We are considering this to me the bare minimum.

    Rejeeps build is very nice, and one that I strive to match in quality. However in the picture above both of his children are not actually restrained by those seat belts.

    The geometry of the shoulder restraints is terrible for a child that small in that seat. On top of that they are not strapped in tight. In racing the closer you are to the wall when you hit it, the harder you can hit it and keep going without major damage. Same goes for seat belts. You want those tight, any slack and you are more likely
    to be injured by the seat belt.

    What Tarry says below here is FACT.
    You are assuming a certain level of risk everyday even just walking down the street. While it may not be practical to have kids riding in racing seats with helmets, hans devices and car seats, there are many ways to step up the safety.

    JMO - a nicely done, mild to mid built JK 4door is the way I would go. I guess its just may not be in the expense budget - but seems like if possible, keep the cj5 around for your own enjoyment or for when the kids get older. At the same time, what you think you want and need 5-10 years from now has a large chance of changing (especially with the kids) so its quite possible the great green cj5 would move on out of the plan. On the flip side, having a great and safe time with your kids would probably be worth it...and if/when and more hardcore build is in order again, you would have solid start with the jk. Its certainly not a easy decision....good luck.

    So yesterday i was looking at the jeep in the garage and with time and lot a reflexion i could go another way. Maybe going with the big project is too much for what i need.

    I still can just get my custom current frame and add the 20" to his lenght and fit the body of the cj6 over. This way i could lower the total price and keep the jeep for pleasure time when kid will be older and find something esle to drive on the road...

    It's been a week a big reflexion on what i'll do but all the input make thing a little clearer now. keep on posting here all opinions is still welcome :)

    It seems that the safest cars are the... Volvo. I remember a crash test between 2 cars, a small one and a big one. The small one was... destroyed.
    The fact is that we don't choose the kind of accident we like. Generally, it happens when all is calm, you drive gently, country is beautiful and suddenly... it happens. No warning.
    New cars have quite good electronic systems to protect, automatic brakes, etc...
    If you can build a car with all protections, it is good, whatever the look (CJ6).
    Until today, I avoided accidents but my habit of motorcycle helped me = never stop take care of the road, never more than 2 seconds looking elsewhere. On a motorcycle, 2 seconds not concentrated = accident.
    And when I was late, the idea was to drive slower! 50 years of driving and no accident. One day I must stop driving!

    Let’s call it like it is. We’re strapping in vehicles that were never designed with safety in mind.. lap belt or full harness safety starts with how you operate and the risks you take, as said many times here..

    I went the route of car seats with a platform and special mounting points... but those seats are only rated for 40lbs and try getting 2 in the back of any open top Jeep. Hated how sloppy they were.. for my family and my vehicle use with kids in it this setup works.

    I mean after reading this thread again I feel 3/4 of us should be dead..

    Teach your kids to be safe and show them how to be safe.. the rest unfortunately isn’t up to you most of the time.
