I need to pull my transmission and transfer case.

What is the best way to support a 225 once the transmission and transfer case are removed?

I don't think the engine mounts are in the 'center of gravity' of the engine

I use a sissor jack with a board under oil pan. This also lets me adjust the angle of the engine when putting it back together

Yep, same here. Scissors jack is good because it will stay there ... no worries about a hydraulic jack leaking down. Screw jack from the junkyard is good too.

The engine is not balanced on the motor mounts as you say so after the trans/xfer are out w/jack under pan, I then insert two long bolts in the top bell-housing holes on the block and with a 2X4 across the floor opening and a chain around the 2 by and to the two bolts. I then remove the pan jack.

I do the board on jack thing too.
I drilled a relief hole in the wood board for the oil plug to nest in to so it wouldn't put the weight of the motor all on the plug.

Ha, for all the transmissions I have ever pulled, a bock of wood or a piece of plywood under the pan and on top of a jack stand is what I used.

If you need to keep the jeep a roller while the trans is out, a ratchet strap around the frame rails and under the oil pan will hold it up.

Good to know when you have the bell housing off too.

And Tomellen thanks for the scissor jack idea--that's like a light bulb going off. I've only got one that isn't inside a car next to the spare.

Easiest way I found was using a jack under the oil pan. Then use an engine hoist and chain to pull the transmission.
I found running the hoist through the door and lowing the transmission to the floor was the fastest way.
I always pull the transfer case first. No point in trying to balance both at the same time.

My floor isn't the levelest so I run a pair of ratchet straps with cast handles. I don't trust them much for lifting. Scissor Jack with a drill is my preference and wood to protect the pan. Then strap to hold just in case. Avoid the exhaust with the straps it isn't fun if they melt...

Yes I use a jack stand. And to get it out I use a piece of plywood bolted to the floor jack. Its actually works quite well

I like all of the ideas on this subject, all will work, just choose the one you want. I do it like Scott says, lower the trans and transfer with a Cherry Picker to a rug on the floor and pull it out. Jeff must be a construction worker, we used a piece of line and a "Twister" a lot of times when in a bind. Good Luck

    Thanks all for the suggestions!!!

I'll probably start with a jack and then something across the frame (2x4) and bolts to keep it level.
