You mean the horse stall mats? Those are heavy and unwieldy. I bought a couple to go under my barbells, and I could hardly lift one on my own. More barbells!

    Tractor Supply stocks them.

Ogilvie is a little town in Minnesota, about 90 miles north of the twin cities. So we have all the rust here, lol. Yeah mines got the open diffs too, but I think the tires I got are a little bigger than stock. They're definitely wider. I don't have many good pictures of the Jeep on my computer, my profile is from last summer when it was completely gutted - since it sat for 35 years the exhaust valve was stuck open and my dad and I made a punch that was just the perfect size to fit in the spark plug hole and tap on it, but that didn't work. So the head came off and got completely redone, I replaced the exhaust valve springs and resurfaced the seats. It doesn't smoke at all - there's barely 26,000 actual miles on it, I know that because my grandpa got it when it had 9,000 and I know he didn't drive it that much. Also, the floorpans were gone, so I actually used some sheet metal off of a scrap Mustang to patch them for now.

I was wondering if you were close. I’m over here in St. Cloud. I can help with sourcing parts if you need, I have some stuff I could part with depending on what you are looking for.

I'm with it. I read PeteL. I'm a primitive, project Jeep owner because the completely enclosed, insulated, carpeted, heated, air conditioned, fuel-injected, microprocessor-controlled, coil spring suspended, automatic 4-door Jeep sold nowadays is a Jeep-In-Name-Only.

Spartan, no frills and austere is where it's at. Plus I know it will survive an EMP blast from a thermonuclear event...

You obviously have not put any Rubicon version (TJ, JK, JL) on a trail or you would not be saying that. Sorry, but all of them are far superior in performance to ANY of what came before them-PERIOD!!!!! It takes a lot of work installing lockers, real brakes, real steering, and a flexible suspension in a CJ to get it to the same place. Yes, it can be done and if properly executed, makes for something that can REALLY put a smile on your face. But that is a substantial investment even when you can do the work yourself.

And frankly, when it's 90+ degrees or below zero, the AC and a real heater are pretty nice on those highway miles to where ever the 4x4 action is needed. And I'm not too worried about the thermonuclear blast. It has about the same probability of happening as Yellowstone exploding. I still have a couple of carbed vehicles here, but if either of those events happen, chances are I will not be worrying about whether or not a certain vehicle has fried electronics.

He's not arguing performance. I think we all understand perfectly well that the new rigs- designed as they are with all the advantages of decades of experience and technological innovation- are easier and more comfortable to operate. Even if the only consideration is the amount of R&D dollars thrown at the Rubicon vs the '55 Willys you can easily see that one had paramount advantages over the other.

My '54 M38A1 was built for military duty. You can see it every time you crawl around that jeep- it was built for survival, ruggedness and simplicity. It has no heater, sound system or AC or any of the other so-called advantages the new stuff has. On the other hand, it has, as the song goes, "things money can't buy".

    Gratuitous photo

Keep it civil folks, we all have differing expectations, differing intentions and differing experiences. If theirs don't agree with yours ...

Then I don't have to tell you why we're on this forum dedicated to (in simpler terms) an updated WWII Jeep (basically an engine, 4 wheels and 2-3 seats).

To the OP: I will just say you may not fully grasp just how weighty the cool factor is with driving something so "old fashioned".
Also: Gunner's photo shows an M38A1 but I own a civil version of that Jeep. That's cool. [IMG]

As to comfort factor that's a somewhat relative argument or... "maaan, we're getting super-soft as a species aren't we?"

    You misunderstood me. [IMG]
Maybe Jeep-In-Name-Only was a bit harsh and perhaps that's where you took offense but I feel (as do many) that Jeep Corp. has strayed from its roots

Then you seemed to contradict yourself in the same paragraph by saying as long as one throws a lot of money at an old CJ5 (the same that a factory new Rubicon costs?) then you'd have a platform equal to the Rubicon WX, XY, ZY. How about better? The sky's the limit and anything is possible.

But we're talking about old Jeeps here and basically keeping their limitations and their charm intact.

I forgot to put doors on my list. Doors are lame.

Exactly. I get more positive comments everyplace I go than a Lamborghini or McLaren would... with my pure stock '56 CJ5 (no doors .) And it's unbelievably inexpensive to own.

More important - it makes me feel good, that I'm still tough enough not to need or want a bunch of comfort features.

Although I admit the new seats are really nice!

By all that's holy, I had no idea he was that young. o_O

He's acclimatized to the comforts, ease and luxuries of this here 21st century. Every convenience in the world is served up on a silver platter; instant gratification.

No wonder he's asking these questions---to him a 1963 Jeep is not only primitive... it's a barbaric form of transportation!:lol::rofl:

I knew I was in the wrong century when I went to buy a radio for my YJ, and was offered a model with a remote control - for a device to be used 24 inches away from me!
