The oil shedder is part of the timing cover. Staked in place from the factory. The front packing is actually a role style front crankshaft main seal. Do yourself a favor and don't bother with these. Use a replacement neoprene front main seal. It replaces both parts and seals much better.

Any idea of a part number, or where I can pick up said seal?

    Thanks!

FelPro 15200 or SKF 22415. Should be able to find them anywhere although it may have to be ordered.

I got my timing cover off last night and was wondering the same thing as you Biggyniner. Glad to see the FelPro seal is easily sourced.

I do have a couple of questions though for the experts - it looks like my shedder has been crushed or misshapen - wondering what would cause this issue? Is it something that needs to be replaced or can I bend it back into shape?

And also - there was not a button/spring (#16,17 above) forward of the timing sprocket "special bolt." Also, there isn't any wear on the inside of timing chain cover. Should I seek out a button/spring, or just leave it as-is when I get around to reassembly in (my wife's estimated year of) 2038?

    Lastly - guessing the "hairball" I found on the timing chain damper is the remnants of a seal from somewhere - would this have been the seal around the camshaft that failed long ago and stuck around? 20181211_GK_untitled shoot_Photo Dec 11, 6 44 33 AM.jpg 20181211_GK_untitled shoot_Photo Dec 11, 6 44 20 AM.jpg 20181210_GK_untitled shoot_Photo Dec 10, 5 22 57 PM.jpg 20181210_GK_untitled shoot_Photo Dec 10, 5 22 55 PM.jpg 20181210_GK_untitled shoot_Photo Dec 10, 5 22 22 PM.jpg

The dented part looks like the old seal casing, the hairball is the packing to the same. The button and spring are not on all Dauntless' mine didn't have one.

Yep I would agree......although how did it get like that????.............you need a new seal for the timing cover.......a new timing chain and while you there both gears and the rubber bumpers on both sides of the chain.............and since the cover is off it's a good time to pay attention to your oil pump , cavity & gears..

Tarry - good question, hard to think how that seal could have been crushed like that. I do have a complete FelPro 225 engine gasket set on reserve when it comes time to put things back together.

Question for you, for my educational purposes - what makes you think the chain and dampers and gears are all worth replacing? How / what should I investigate further to support that conclusion?

Here's a pic of the oil pump gear cavity - what should I be looking for here? Also I didn't take a pic, but the gears look fine to me. 20181211_GK_untitled shoot_Photo Dec 11, 6 44 27 AM.jpg

Was it running that way or did you get the motor as a basket case?
    • On the Chain..........just from your pictures I can see slack on both sides of the chain making it loose...........that chain & gear set when installed new should be taunt but not tight.......also the witness marks inside your cover at the top show that the chain was probably slapping that cover from the looseness............and last , if you have no record of when the chain & gears were last replaced......I just change them......cheap maintenance like who wants to go back in there at a later date?
    • On the oil pump cavity.......do you know what the oil pressure was before it was taken apart? The cavity wall OD to the gear face clearance , including gear end clearance will determine how well the oil pump will perform & make pressure..........too loose and you have low oil pressure.......known problem on these motors.

The chain and gears cost less than $50 and take under an hour to change as you have it all exposed now. One bolt.

Great advice guys thank you. It does make sense to replace these items after I clean up the block.

Tarry the engine r was running just fine all the way through from when I bought her in 2008 through to this year when I decided to start my project. The oil pressure was around 50psi (from memory) consistently.

Wondering if this is a date stamp on the timing gear of June 1978, indicating the last time it as changed?

I'll admit too I am a novice here trying to learn my way through this, I have a good buddy who is a mechanic so I'm going to get him to come by and look everything over with me, should only cost me a few :beer:s to get a professional opinion!

Fabulous photos, truckee4x4 just a wealth of visual info...

Dumb question everyone, but how is the timing chain and gears lubricated? Is it in a constant oil bath inside the cover?
