After posting some random pics about my jeep in some random threads I decided (Focker suggested) to document it all here in a more coherent way. I will be posting some of the past accomplishments and as much as time permits, progress. Later!

Also, old jeeps are waaay cooolll! Down here in Miami there's not a big culture of early Jeeps and when you see one is already restored and extremely out of my budget. I saw it on CL and my oldest son and I went all the way to Naples to buy it. I liked it as soon as I laid eyes on it. A little rough (a lot as I found out later), but doable. A good indicator was the fact I started it on the first turn of the key and the engine sounded very good. No brakes and a slipping clutch made a really scary run up the ramp of the U-haul transport. Here is what it looked like when we got home.

Nice jeep you got there. Father & Son projects are the best. Will have lots of fond memories, I know I do from when my Dad and I did the first restoration of my jeep in '86. Wish you much success. The knowledgeable folks here will provide information and answers along your journey.

One of my first tasks was to understand and to rebuild my Ross and if possible, improve it. I don't want to go the saginaw way just yet. I will like to get a feeling first of how the Ross behaves with a decent set up and tight tolerances. I found my box in a horrible state. Contaminated lubricant, pitted worm and sector and bushings... you name it!

After I bought a rebuild kit for the steering box, I realized the bushings were to loose and short. I decided to do a little mod. I made a full sleeve on oil impregnated bronze and opened the lubrication orifice aligned with a cut made with a file. After pressing in the sleeve (left with one thousand oversize OD) I reamed it to size. The new sector shaft now has a nice slip fit with practically no play. Did I mention how awesome is my sandblaster box?

I'm giving it a shot to my "home made" steering tightening device (not plugging any name). I'll post results when I install it.

After seeing this beauty, I decided to do something like it (to the extent of my capabilities).
    This Mornings Machining Project
I has purchased before a repair kit for the bell crank that, to be blunt was a POS! :poo: A concoction of sleeve/bearings that allowed a little more play I was willing to take. I was thinking about how to proceed when I bumped into the link above.
    IMG_20181105_161713030.jpg IMG_20181106_135354472.jpg IMG_20181106_135600471.jpg

Let's see how it works, but there is virtually 0 play. I have to set the pre-load and then indicate it, but I suspect it will be several orders of magnitude better that the crappy kit I got. :bananatool:

Update: I have been working in all kinds of directions: some mechanical repairs, as I run out of funds... some patching up! Until I can buy more parts again. Since availability of parts locally are near zero, I decided to rebuild my Dana 25. A Dana 30 was impossible to acquire (nobody wants to ship) so I jump into rebuilding and converting to discs in the front. Maybe in the future,I will put 11" in the back.

As you can see, other than the hub bearings, everything else was shot.

The u-joint I got did "fit" but the clip slot was not reaching position since they were longer. Luckily I have a lathe! I managed to widen the cut to accommodate the c-clips. It came out ok.

while you have the knuckles apart, you might consider converting the knuckles to a stud type assembly rather than the factory bolts in threaded holes assembly.

Here is one of many threads that discuss it:

    Knuckle studs...again

I vaguely recall seeing something about it. What would be the advantage of it? It is engaging on the same threads on the knuckle if I'm not mistaken (I often am).:sneak:

Keep in mind the knuckle is cast steel and is fairly brittle. The threaded holes are notorious for breaking, ruining the knuckle. putting the threaded button head cap screws in from the back side is much stronger. The head of the screws transfer the load to a broader area of the knuckle. If you look the link I posted earlier, read through Warloch's write up.

I'll second the knuckle stud conversion. Years ago, I lost a wheel because the bolts pulled out.

Slowly advancing on the project. I will post some updates. Introducing the concept of torque to the actual owner! IMG_20190309_144232747-816x459.jpg IMG_20190309_144138775-816x459.jpg IMG_20190309_145334194-459x816.jpg IMG_20190309_151104117-816x459.jpg

After installing and completing the knuckle screws and spindle, I have the suspicion the length of the screws are not going to be enough to capture the brake plates of 3/8 thickness.
