    Guys

Top hole at the grill is cracked out, bits of missing metal, poor braze repair. Are weld repairs there destined to fail again?

Thinking to excise a piece from a donor fender and splice in a palm- sized section rather than try to weld the spider web of crack. Recommendations?

Regardless of the welding, I'd be thinking about backing it up with some kind of reinforcement.

I'd weld the crack, trim the hole back to solid thick metal & put in a pre-shaped patch- a little hammer & dolly work & it will look factory & last a long time.

Do yourself a favor and “stop drill” the end of the crack with a #10 drill bit. We do it in the aviation community everyday as long as it’s not in a critical area and below 1’. Only job I did yesterday on a C130-W Gunship was stop drilling a small crack near the #3 engine chin scoop and applying high temp sealant afterwards. Then you can latter decide if you weld it or replace it. This will prevent the crack from getting longer.

I'll second what has already been shared...solid advice.

Jarhead's response reminded me of a time when I wore a much younger man's clothes and asked my father's advice about whether or not I should repair a small crack in a compressor housing (I was young and lazy, hoping to leave it alone). He has a way of packing a lot of wisdom into very few words and guiding me to do the right thing without actually telling me what to do. His response was simply, "I have never seen a crack get smaller."
