Would I do any harm by installing a heater hose shutoff valve on my V6 like the F heads have? Normally I pull off the hoses at the core and connect them together in the summer. I picked up one of the shutoff valves Id like to put it where the hose comes out of the back of the manifold to make the job easier and less messy. Just want to be sure it doesnt need the flow back there.

Why do you do this? Shouldn't get any heat coming out of the heater if the temp lever is in the cold position...

I have always found, in a variety of vehicles, that it is nice to turn the heater on while pulling a long hill with a load to help with engine cooling.

You need to see if your water pump has an internal bypass or drill a hole in the thermostat for some flow near the thermostat bulb. You don't want a hot spot on the back of the motor and a cold pocket at the thermostat. The f and l head water pump does have an internal bypass. You may also use a set of T fittings like a house hold water filter for changing the filter without shutting off the water. On my stock heater I used a Toyota cable actuated valve that has a open slot when closed. My 2nd heater is a ball valve for summer.

I have a shut-off valve in my heater hose line - ball valve operated by hand. It doesn't seem to cause any problems - the v6 has a bypass hose. The reason I have one at all is I have a second in-cab heater (the heater core is in the cab) and it puts out a noticeable amount of heat under the dashboard that is rather annoying when its already hot out.

Alright cool. I redesigned my heater box so it recirculates the in cab air and there is no flap to stop the radiant heat flowing through. Surprisingly it still feels like the heat is on in the summer from the firewall heating up. I have no problem with overheating despite having quite a few rows of my radiator plugged off. I think I did drill a hole in the t stat but im not sure. I will install the valve and keep an eye on the temp. I also have an infared thermometer i can check whats going on both ways.
