    Here's a visual aid:

    Here's the story:
My son and I we're heading home from lunch and I thought it would be fun to let him drive. I pulled over and he took control. He had trouble with the whole clutch, brake & gas combo, after his 3rd stall he gunned it! CLUNK...Stall...We both looked at each other and I said something broke. I got out and told him to try again. What I could see was a spinning rear drive line with no forward momentum. I drove the 1/2 mile home in 4 Hi. The best I can tell is something in the rear 44 failed.

I used to sell a lot of axle shafts. Hardly ever sell them anymore as so few Jeeps are still running with tapered axles. If they are still running tapered axles it is usually going a mile into town to get ice cream. The wheeling crowd has all moved on to Toyota and JKs.

Another reason for the 30 spline - you have a larger variety of locker options. I'm running FF with OX lockers front and rear. MUCH stronger and it allows me to run 33s in the rocks and feel safe about it. My weak link is the U-Joints, by design on the drive train.

So I'm a little confused then on Herm's $1000 floater kit. I don't just pull off my old hubs and axels and put on the new stuff? I do or do not have to mess with the middle of the differential changing things out?

All you have to know is how many splines your axles currently are. If on a CJ5, most likely are 19 spline axles. He will send you everything that you need to bolt it all together in a few hours.

Since I have the cover off changing fluids and inspecting, I should be able to see to count or do I have to physically pull the axel?

To identify just look at the end of the axle. If you have the tapered-19spline then it will have the nut on the center outside face of the wheel hub. If you don't have the nut at the wheel hub but have a flat (well there is a dished out circle - but its essentially flat) you have flanged 30 spline. It never hurts to check and count as things get changed, but that is basically the two options. For most ecj5, they have the 19spline tapered axle with the nut at the wheel hub. Someone can correct me if I am wrong.

Still need to check as there are 10 spline Dana 44s also. Unlikely on a CJ5 but anything could have been swapped over the last 50 years. If your cover is off and it is an open differential, you should be able to count the splines on the end of the axle.

To add to the confusion there were 19 spline aftermarket axles "back in the day". Those can usually be identified by a machined rather than rough forged flange though. Point is, like Daryl alluded to, do not take anything for granted and double check. I've converted plenty of early CJ's that should have had 19 spline shafts but had 10 spline back to 19 spline. Remember early CJ's and Flatfenders are a bolt-in interchange.

Well, the diff cover is off, but I could not see any splines to count. But I did find this tag on it. I know what the 5.38 means and I assumed the 43-8 is the tooth count on the ring and pinion but I didn't actually count them.

While at it, I drained the front too but did not find a tag. I guess after 60 years, it's to be expected. Both had been into before as someone had used orange silicone and no gasket. I don't really care for it but it's gone now.
