Now that my Jeep is really quiet, I’m starting to hear all the other things that make noise. Specifically the Oddfire has a fairly noticeable lifter tick. I’m guessing the cam has a lobe going flat. I installed a Melling replacement camshaft when I started to build this Jeep along with new lifters and new chain, gears and tensioner. I broke the cam in properly as I do when I build any engine. I have put about 35000 on the engine since I put the cam and lifters in. The engine has had no other work done and I have no idea of the mileage. Should I just stick another camshaft/lifters in? What brands do you guys all use? I’d prefer to not rebuild the whole engine.

All the odd fire engines I have taken apart had round lobes and crushed lifters. I don't doubt you may have a cam problem.

Yep. All the above, Don't know why but #1 is always the biggest offender IME. Before you tear things down check that it's not just a lifter not staying up. Also is it only at idle/ low speed or at road speed?

It's generally loudest at idle, but I can't hear it at road speed. It may still be there but it's pretty quiet if it is.

Keep in mind, it's never super loud. With the cam and lifters replaced 35000 or so ago, I expect silence is all. Maybe I expect too much. Lol

With their non adjustable valvetrain these are fussy and if they are light on preload at the lifters they can be ticky at idle and low speed. If you can live with it it will probably be fine. Otherwise you can check it out and get longer pushrods if need be.

I just had an even fire put together with a lunati cam and lifters and the stock pushrods may be marginal. There's preload but not alot. If it ticks I'm getting longer ones but going to try it first.

Hydraulic lifter..........could be bad / dirty.............try some Marvel Mystery oil in the crankcase

"This is highly economical, highly effective fix for lifter noise problem. Marvel Mystery Oil fortifies the base properties of your basic motor oil, whether traditional or synthetic, by increasing its ability to prevent valve sticking and clutter by breaking down the harmful deposits of carbon and sludge"

Exactly why I go through the oil system from top to bottom.
