They really do just pop right off with the right puller.

Tapered axles are STUPID STUPID STUPID!!!

I'm defeated for today. No pullers like Daryl's in town so I made one.

Started with the plates that will sit up against the drum and the lug nuts will hold on.

Cobbled the rest of it together and it looked like this when finished.

Got A LOT of torque on it, enough to bend the puller and eventually break it.

You could just undo the backing plate bolts and remove the axle, bearing, and hub without using a puller. That is if you are just going to reinstall the old parts. :bananatool:

Seriously? That's exactly what I want to do. I didn't know it would come apart like that.:clap::clap:

Find an old Ford guy around you, as in Model A. They use essentially the same puller for the rear axle.
As an alternative, an old British car mechanic should have the same puller. I have a great tale to tell about a hub "exploding" off a '58 Jaguar. The puller/hub combo nearly imbedded itself in an adjacent tree over 10' away.
If you can get to the nuts and bolts holding the backing plate to the axle tube, the whole mess should slide out of the housing.
Your puller needs at least a 1" fine thread center bolt, preferrably bigger.

...and then hammer on the bolt head after it is torqued up. With a BFH.

This thread does not have me particularly excited about having to dive into my rear end at some point for the same reason. I'd love to find a flanged 44.

I ordered the giant puller, will be here Friday. For the record I really dislike the tapered axle now.

I did recently buy a flanged D44 for $25. Today's experience has really motivated to trim it down to the size I want and get the axles shortened.

I had to delve into the depths of photobucket hell to retrieve these pics...
Nothing special, I'd probably add some gussets if I'd have to put too much pressure on it. Without gussets, it'll create a lot of springload in the flat plate.

Amazon has a heavy duty one for around $40.00. I bought one and it worked perfect. Like they said you need one if you have tapered axels. Good Luck

local equipment rental shop had the one i used a year ago...took them a long time to find it way back in the "i know we used to have one" room
and yep...it was exciting when the axle released! stand to the side as you hammer/crank on that thing!
