Broke the housing on my dana 25 back in February....searched for a replacement for a couple weeks with no luck and decided it was time to install the dana 30 from a 74 cj that had been on the side of my house for the last few years. Been avoiding the project since the project creep was going to be enormous.

I liked how my winch was mounted, so I decided to do the bronco steering gear that I've seen a few here on the site do. Not nearly as popular as the front saginaw approach, so I though I'd post a few photos.

Installed a postal column, mounted the new steering gear, had to move my OBA compressor so I could put the PS pump in it's place. Tried it out this weekend and the PS works! Now all I need to do is install the locker, gears, ball joints, bearings, u-joints, etc. Took the diff back out on Saturday and started tearing it down.

    The new postal column

Steering gear pitman arm and drag link. Had to move the shock to the back side of the axle.

If my calculations are correct, I should have about 12 HP left to turn the wheels :D

Are you cooling the OBA in front of the radiator?

    Thanks for the encouragement guys!

Yes, there is a small heat exchanger in front of the radiator.

I think you'll like it. I think the only advantage I noticed that the front mounted box has over this is that the for the front mount, the pitman arm doesn't have to reach over the tie rod. I mounted the box as high on the frame as I could justify to avoid any potential interference. Even with that, I don't think a tie rod flip is possible.

Great idea about the heat exchange....when i try the york compressor find-out that it make too much heat and i destry an air filter. Didn't think about doing that to prevent heating.

Do you remember what the fitting sizes were on the ford steering gear for the supply & return lines? I am getting close to the point where I need to make some hoses for my set up but haven't sat down and figured out what fittings I am going to need yet.

Nice work, I like it a lot. Where did you get the universal joint for the double D shaft, ( coming up from the frame) coming out from the firewall. I usually use a Heim joint in those places (run the double D shaft through it) that I need a bend, but like that a lot more.

    Did you mean support bearing?
I just bought some of those for our zip line trolley. I got mine at the local tractor store. The outside of the bearing is rounded to handle a bit of misalignment.

Edit: I'm balancing my checkbook and just came across the receipt for these (1" shaft version). The bearings were $8.99 each and the flanges were $2.99.

Supply is 5/16" inverted flare, return is 3/8" inverted flare.

Used this fitting for the return
    https://www.discounthydraulichose.c...MIz6CK4J3c3AIVzKqWCh322g6aEAQYASABEgJ5f_D_BwE

For the supply side I used this hose with a 90 degree 5/16" inverted flare elbow and a short 5/16" inverted flare jumper. I had to tweak the hose just a little bit. The 3/8" SAE end fit the PS pump CJ/442 gave me.

Here is the pitman arm I used. It could have been just a tad longer, but I think it'll work. The drag link end taper was a little too deep for the jeep TRE. I ended up using a ES150R TRE for that connection, but needed to use a tapered reamer to make the hole in pitman arm a bit deeper.

All of the steering linkage components are Borgenson. Bought them from Summit because they were a little cheaper. All that stuff is deceivingly expensive. ITLKSEZ has a good suggestion. At summit it was $26. That double u-joint was the real big ticket item.

I run OBA and power steering on an L head. I only notice the the engine struggle when the air kicks on at an idle.

Air you going with an air locker in the front?

Well... I called a support bearing. It's a bearing that offers support. :)

Here's the packaging mine came in. The bearing also came with a cammed locking collar. I know they're also available at TSC (I used to work at one). They're on the shelf in my local "North 40" farm store in shaft sizes from 1/2" to 1 1/2" in 1/8" increments.

I found some photos of your L-head during my research phase. It was nice to see it could be done....not many out there.

Yes, going to install a Yukon Zip locker.

Here is the support bearing I used.

    https://www.summitracing.com/parts/brg-700010/overview/

Most of these support bearings look like rod ends.

If you have more than 2 universal joints on your steering shaft you need a support. I was really hoping to not need a support, but I just couldn't get the turn at the bottom of the steering column to work without the double u-joint.
