Should be borrowing my buddies tube bender soon to make the roll bar setup. After that I'd like to have a canvas top. Something that looks a little more rugged and military than a Bestop. Any ideas where I could have either a half or whole soft top made up?

    My $.02-

Canvas is not the best material for a top- it's either too tight to fasten or so loose it flaps on your head. If you just want something that looks a bit different pattern wise & are not looking for an authentic replica talk to your local marine sail shops about more modern materials.

Check out ebay #1926 1063 3991. This is the M38-A1 summer top (like a long bikini top, with a back panel to the tailgate). The price is pretty resonable at $375, but you will need to supply your own top bows.

Thanks for all the help folks. It doesn't really have to be per se canvas; it can be "canvas" as long as it looks like it should fit on a 55-71 model year Jeep.

I like the military top look and the bows. But on a CJ, I'd want something I could open at the rear. To get what I have in mind, it would probably have to be custom made. Also no snaps. I've always had problems with the snaps on soft tops coming apart and not being usable anymore. Straps and loops would be the way to go for me.

I'm kind of in agreement with you. But since my CJ is red, I'd probably want black instead of Olive Drab. The military style seems to go back a little further to the rear giving rear passengers more rain protection and head room to the rear. Just my opinion.

I want one too. I like the small windows--gives a cozy look and a bit of privacy.

Just to say, I have two bolts of Military canvas, heavy as hell. They came from somewhere around here, Michigan, I will sell them but the shipping might be costly. It is the real Military stuff.

Fine until you are trying to reverse and run over a mailbox or punch a tree branch through the vinyl. I vote for maximum visibility, based on painful experience.

Back-up camera retrofit? Could be done ...

My experience is visibility out of soft tops is pretty poor, and gets a lot worse at night ... and/or in the rain.

It takes a special kind of person with excellent depth perception and situational awareness to get by with small windows or without utilizing a rear-view camera.
I see people using only their mirrors when backing up. I use my whole head to look.

The military hasn't learned your lessons either... :p

I remember in my early 20's watching a guy back into a tight parking spot with just his 3 mirrors. I was so impressed that I learned to do the same and without the backup camera. It just takes practice and confidence. Now with the dinky little round mirrors on the jeep, I still turn.

We-Be Webbing is great - got seat cushions and a full enclosure for my M38 years ago.
