What are your thoughts on swapping a Holley 2245 two-barrel carb onto a Dauntless V6?

Why am I considering this? About 15 years ago I cracked my stock intake manifold by winding in a temp sender and got a 231 intake (I think) from a member here. It uses a larger carb bolt pattern, and I found a Holley 2245 to go on it. Now I'm back to considering changing the intake manifold and carb. But would I be creating more issues for myself? Please weigh in.

Don't know about the 2245 specifically, but Holleys are considered poor carburetors for a Jeep. It looks to me like the 2245 is a 2300 with the large Rochester base pattern. It'll work, but the Holleys tend to be very off-angle and bounce sensitive. When I had a 2300 on my 304, it was a big power boost for the street, but there were some angles it would not run at. And it would flood badly over rough terrain. There are a bunch of aftermarket parts for the Holleys that make the 2300 better for the trail - lots of coverage of this on the net. IMO, you'd be better off to get a plate adapter and run a Motorcraft 2100. Or there is a Rochester that fits - Dual Jet? Something like that. SImilar to the Quadrajet but a 2V, I think.

Thanks, timgr. That's the input I was looking for, and performance issues I want to avoid.

The 2245 was a factory carb on a lot of Chrysler products, and IH scouts. It shares nothing with the 2300 series (except maybe main jets, I don't remember)
I would try it out and see how it works for you.

I'll be the odd man out and say that I am running a Holley 2 bbl on my OF 231. The carb was on my '66 Scout (266 V8). I rebuilt it, set the float on the low side and run it on the lean side. I like it well enough both on and off road.

I do want to try a Motorcraft 2100 so I can make a comparison.

Holley carbs can be modified to work off road, with extended vents, spring loaded needle and seats, float adjustments etc i;e: Truck Avengers. It depends on your tuning abilities, mechanical aptitude, and patience, and lacking all this, how deep are your pockets? The least complicated solution seems to be the Motorcraft 2100. About as close to plug and play as it gets. Good luck!

Again, none of this applies to the Holly 2245.
    Complete different animal.

Is the 2245 a center mounted float system? Like half of a 2450 racing carb?

That's pretty much the one. Not at all like the Holley I had in my old Blazer - totally different fuel bowl.

Methinks the main issue with the 2300/4150/4160 Holleys in a Jeep is the power valve and jets are on the wall (side) of the float bowl. The wall location makes the float, power valve and main jets easy to access - the bowl removes like a cup holding the float and the jets and PV are right there on the carb body. The Holley and Motorcraft are similar in function except the Motorcraft puts the jets and PV on the floor of the float bowl rather than on the wall, and hangs the float off the side of the carb body. A 2100 will run with the carb top off and you looking at the pool of gas in the float bowl. It looks like the 2245 is more like the Motorcraft in this respect, though the float may be suspended from the top cover. It's also a side pivot float, sort off - the 2300 and 4150 come with center pivot floats, which are very much prone to fuel starvation or flooding on steep inclines. Also the bowl vents are too low in Holleys.

This is the main issue with "normal" Holley carbs for off road use.
Again, none of this applies to the OP's carb.
If memory serves (& it's been many years since I've rebuilt one) the float on a 2245 is as Tim mentioned above, a side pivot design attached to the top of the carb much like a 2G.

My intention for my previous post was to suggest possible solutions for known Holley shortcomings should you choose to install the 2245 on your 225.

Thanks for that tech view. I guess mine is an earlier one, based on that bowl vent shown. Still - it strikes me as very similar to the 2G and therefore a strong contender as a replacement. Just doesn't seem to be much feedback from the Jeep world. I've found some from Mopar and IH forums.

Good info since I seem to have a 2300 (that will require more web research on off-road mods)

I can’t help you with that 2245 but my old racer I has a 500 2b on it with an adapter to fit stock manifold and it worked great. A few small tweaks and no issues off road. My engine was a mild build with a large cam and worked well. Stock could and most likely be different. My 2cents worth
