Fuel Line Thread Sealant

    What do you guys use for thread sealant on the fuel pump and carburetor brass connectors? I know the line side is a flare so not used but on the pump/carburetor side.

    if it's a flare fitting no thread sealant should be needed

    A little teflon tape can be helpful, but as PatW said, nothing else should be needed on a pipe thread.

    Personally I would recommend a liquid Teflon thread sealer over tape. More than once I've seen careless application of Teflon tape result in a little bit of Teflon tape winding up in the carb. Get a piece of that in your needle & seat and that's all you need to convert your carb into a fountain!
    Just to elaborate on the above, thread sealant should only be used on tapered pipe thread...a double flare fuel fitting requires no sealant and a straight thread fitting (like the inlet on a 2G carb) should have a gasket to seal it.

    Note that if you tighten a flare nut fitting using an open end wrench, the nut will sometimes bend out-of-round and then it will not seal. Always use a flare nut wrench on flare nuts. A distorted nut is usually the problem with these fittings leaking, not the pipe threads. Tighten the pipe threads enough and the fitting will crack - then no amount of sealant will stop the leak.

    The area I'm talking about is the 90 degree brass fitting where it screws into the body of the carb and fuel pump. Since they need to be at a precise position for the fixed steel fuel line, that may be not the tightest.

    Nothing wrong with the old Permatex #2 in that application, IMHO.

    FWIW I'm sure we have all noticed that the quality of fittings has gone down the drain over the years. I like to try brass fittings for a test fit by hand first before doing anything else. Some are so poorly sized they will almost bottom out just turning by hand.
