    I have a 70, CJ5 V6

The only way I can get the flashers to work is if the turn signal is switched on, left or right side. The little light in the flasher has has yet to come on. There is a green wire in the flasher that is not hooked up.

I have a NOS Sparton Turn signal and a NOS Emergency Flasher. Coming out of the flasher there is a yellow, brown, black and green wire. Hooked the yellow, black and brown into the turn signal wiring harness. Where does the green go. If I ground the green wire, the fuse blows.

The wires in the turn signal harness are, yellow, blue, brown, black and orange. Red wire with fuse runs to the flasher base. Black wire runs from the turn signal housing to the flasher base. White wire in harness, plugs into white wire from flasher base.

    I have a Walck's wiring harness.

    Any ideas.

Can anyone tell me how the E Flasher works. Is there a power in? Where does it get its power from? Should it be grounded?

Isn't the E flasher the only one in the system? Or are there separate ones for turn signals and the emergency circuit?

There has to be power into the flasher, current to a light or lights completes the circuit. No ground. In simple terms current through the flasher is interrupted internally and momentarily by overheating (as I understand it). I can't help with the wiring diagram.

I did not like the electrical dwg. in the FSM plus I added some item to my jeep so I draw up my own drawing. It will have some things different then the original wiring, but the part that shows the turn signal and flashers are all the same. So if you go here

    http://www.hdts.vcn.com/JEEP/JEEP ELECTRICAL DASH AREA .pdf

You see the turn signal and flasher wiring and I have shown the wire colors coming out of the turn signal.

Talk to Carl Walck today. The four wires coming out of the Emergency Flasher need to be hooked up to the four wires that go the front parking lights and the rear tail lights. The color of the wires on the E flasher will not match the color of the wires in the harness, where the turn signal ties into the harness.

Got the E flasher tied into the wiring harness. When the E flasher knob is pulled out, to turn on the flashers, the lights do not come on. The lights start flashing when the turn signal is activated. All 4 corners blink when the turn signal is switched left or right. Do not think this is correct but everything works.

The way I look at this, when the turn signal being activated, this is the only way power is going to get to the Emergency Flasher switch since there is no power supply to it.

    There should be two flashers.

The power to the turn signal flasher is switched meaning it only works when the key is on.

Separate fused unswitched power feeds the four way flasher. That power goes into the four way flasher. Then it comes out of the flasher and then into the four way switch on the green wire.

This is the four way switch on my 70.

This is the turn Signal switch.

A fused power wire (unswitched) goes into the four way flasher. The green wire from the four way switch plugs on to the flasher. The flasher will make the power go on and off making things flash.
The other three wires are half-tapped (bridged) color for color to the Sparton pigtail. I diagramed only one wire as an example.
Those last three wires go into the turn Signal switch and also go to the lights.

The bulb on your switch will only work if you have power on the green wire and the switch is mounted in the dash. The indicator light gets its ground from the dash.

    Hope this helps.

Here is a picture of a sketch I made of the wires under the dash. There is a Letter, number by each wire color, which I hope makes it easier to note what goes where. F is for wires coming out of Flasher. W is for the wires in the wiring harness. T is for the wire coming out of the turn signal wiring harness. Had to take a picture of the sketch I made, Beam would not let me upload a PDF

On my 71 there are two flashers involved. A two prong flasher that is tied to the emergency flasher switch (Fused Battery Power off the light switch) and a three prong flasher that is tied to the turn signal switch (switched Fused Power off the ignition switch when in the run state)

    4-Way Flasher Switch

    Green -> Two-Way Flasher
Yellow -> Left Front Turn Signal Light
Black -> Right Turn Signal Light
Brown -> Ties into Stop Light Switch wiring to power Rear Lights through front Stop Switch and rear stop switch

    Two-Way Flasher

Red -> Battery off Light Switch
White-Red (Fused) -> Green off 4-way Flasher Switch

    *********************************************************
    Turn Signals 3 Way Flasher

White -> Power wire off the Turn Signal Switch
Red-White (Fused) -> Switched power off the Ignition in Run Position
    Black -> Ground

Turn Signal Wiring - I run a GM Column with the turn signal integrated; therefore won't match.
remaining wires just need to be integrated to the lamp you want to flash with the turn signal in the proper position.

Hope this helps. I spent way too much time messing with this.

Got flasher working correct. Going to add a little to what 71CJ5Renegrade posted.

I have a Signal Stat Model # 105Y148. This has 4 wires in the harness. Green, Yellow, Black and Brown

Picked up power for the flasher switch from the head light switch. Power is run thru a fuse, then to a 2 prong flasher, then to flasher switch. A flasher must be added into the power, since the flasher in the dash is just a on/off switch, the added flasher blinks the lights. Hooked power to the green wire going to flasher.
Yellow wire to the yellow wire in the harness (Left Turn Signal)
Black wire to black wire in the harness ( Right Turn Signal)
Brown wire to brown wire in harness ( Brake Lights Rear)
You will need a "Y" connect to hook the 3 above wires into the harness

I added a ground wire from the flasher switch to my ground block under the dash.

I would like to thank 71CJ5Renegrade and ojgrosoi for your time.

Glad you got everything. Still have my dash off and waiting for a new oil pressure guage. My current guage just pins to the far right now once the key is on. Hoping it’s just a bad guage.

With my engine rebuild, I hung a mechanical oil pressure gauge under the dash, a little more than the idiot light.

hi guys, I'm new to the forum and jeeps.
I bought a 1971 cj5, project. I have the same problem. no turn signal and or flashers don't work. under the dash is a wire mess. I found only one 12v flasher L shape with a old fuse not hooked up.
other wire goes to the flarestat. does the fuse wire go to any power sources ? or to keys (on source)?? rick
