I believe that you are correct. My 69 is kinda of a semi gloss hard primer underneath. There are drips from being dipped.

Just to clear up what I said in a earlier post. The bottom side of my renegade is the same as yours .Primer with quite a lot of over spray and then dealer applied undercoating. What made you bring up the subject of over spray in the first place ? mike

Thanks for all the pictures! My 5 was built April, 1971, so these pictures are an excellent reference for me. I also might note mine was originally sold here in Oklahoma, but it did originally have the smog pump. That smog pump disappeared during the late 70s though.

I don't know what was specifically required by each state. I do know there were different state and federal requirements (I believe there were 48 followed Fed, 2 States exceeded with their own specs).
This may be why the pertronix distributor is used on some jeeps? Does yours have Pertronix originally? It would be interesting to have access to a parts book in order to review California specific parts listings.

My 1970 Renegade 1 came with a bunch of documentation including the previous owners struggle with the state of CA and Jeep to get the jeep to be emissions compliant. Which is interesting considering the number of yahoos rolling coal in my neck of the woods and the fact that there are no real emissions testing in Montana.

Continuing the dialing in process I replaced the water temp gauge sensor for the second time and have a working gauge. Waiting for the engine to warm to budge the needle off the basement I noticed the fan alt belt looked pretty loose. While getting ready to adjust found this tag I've not seen in the past. Another factory detail.

Prepping for a local parade adding some vintage amber unity (spot) lights with a wig-wag circuit I found an interesting build tag below the driver side headlight . A thin wire attached it to the screw hole at 7 o'clock (viewed from front of jeep). I need to de-code the numbers at the bottom of the tag, most of the balance makes sense.
I'll also start a separate thread regarding the tag.

Very nice original renegade. I wonder what the 301 N on the front radiator support next to the emission sticker happen to mean, My Sept 71 production has a similar number and letter. Also how many leaf springs in the front and rear are there. Also do you have a pic of the Evap expansion tank under rear drivers side 1/4 panel. I am still curious as to the production date of the engine. Unfortunately your vehicle is a wealth of information, and I am intrigued. Truly amazing to find such a vehicle so original. Cheers

So others know MrTii pm'd and we discussed stamp on rad cowl, it appears the 301 N is a date and (either) inspector mark, or perhaps day (n= 13th day?). More info of others with date stamps and production date may confirm. My production date is March 71. Not sure if 301 is March 1 or March 71 and the N being 13th day? 13th of March was a Saturday, not sure lines ran on weekends. More than likely the N is the particular inspector designation.
Trim/paint tag was mia so had a tag made to replace original. The codes were written in the owner manual and there was sticky residue on firewall so new tag was stuck there (above battery).

DSC02670.JPG I will repost these pictures of my ren II w/manuf date of march 1971. Giving some meaning to the numbers would really be nice. thanks, mike DSC02666.JPG The tags above battery are AWOL. Noticed that my alternator had the belt tension sticker before I had it rebuild.

Sorry for the poor order of my post. So to recap 1971 ren II, manuf date MARCH 1971, sn 3737xx , number on rad shroud 322 (no letter), tags above battery missing, assembly line marks ( 43 ) on firewall and rad shroud near right headlight pod, emission control sticker on shroud 1971 .This is not a California vehicle. Belt tension sticker on alternator. That is all the markings that I found so far.
    Thanks mike

Always exception but for the most part the '70-71 's that I have seen ,mine included, have the PRESTOLITE dist. o.e.m. should not have anything to do w/ cal. emission .

more info to be certain: with Mike and my Cj's having a march 71 build and 3xx stamp, and MrTii being September and 9xx stamp it seems it may parallel a date format.

That's pretty much my conclusion so far. If we had a few more members join in we might get a pattern. NCRenII is your s.n. a few hundred before my 3737xx. ? Glad you two are working on this. Thanks
