I’m not going for restoration here. Just a decent reliable trail rig.

Wanting to put a quick coat of paint on the firewall. How much of this is 50yrs of grease and how much is “other coatings”? How do you know the difference? How many of these f-in holes do I need?

What about using oven cleaner? You can get it at the dollar store.

Mine had alot of extra holes in it, most of them were drilled and not deburred, while the factory holes were punched and smooth. So just by feeling both sides I could tell which ones were added.

What kind of paint are you planning to use. Like Brad says oven cleaner will clean off grease and oil. You can wipe it down with Lacquer Thinner before you paint it. I used Epoxy primer on my frame, then urethane over that. I painted my Jeep Black, I love black cars, so I used Por 15 and brushed the inside and the underbody. Por 15 runs smooth and shinny, and is real hard, resist chipping, and scratches. Good Luck what ever you choose to do.

Those caged nust for the floor cover pop out, it will be alot eaiser to remove them than work around them.

Thanks guys. I just welded up most of the holes that were small enough. I’ll try the oven cleaner next. As I said this is not a restoration just want it presentable. Going to prime and paint w Rattle cans in garage.

Since it's not a restoration, you might consider spray in bed liner (rattle can version from Harbor Freight) on the firewall? I did it on my '71 and I have no regrets.

The 1/4"-20 panel nuts are available at Mcmaster-Carr I can get you the part number if interested. Sure is nice to replace all those rusty nuts with new ones.
I used Hammertone rattle can paint on firewall .Very durable. mike

Note: The condition and cleanliness of the base bare metal is really more important than paint added later..........just about every imperfection in that metal will act as a mirror and later reflect those issues once paint is applied...............dents and dimples from spot welding are the norm and can be left behind...........but old paint and areas that the paint is coming loose or is now rough need to be wire brushed off with a 4" wheel , sandblasted or a commercial stripper applied and or feathered edged off to get to near bare metal.........................I know your not restoring it but a little extra attention in that area now will pay dividends to your final projects looks.....
