Are you going for original looks and function? If not... Ammo can mod will be a good solution.

I have the plastic normal size in the '69.It works fine and a felt or vinyl liner would help with the plastic rattle. The '71 still has the O.E.M. cardboard edition in perfect condition and I hope it stays that way in our Northwest climate. Both are kept in garage. Seems like they could re-pop a cardboard box ?

What about a metal pan like the ones at a buffet that the food sits in? Looks to be about the right shape.

I removed my cardboard one from my 70. It was beginning to sag. I used small pieces of duct tape to reinforce the screw holes. Then I held the box back in its original shape and kept it in place with more duct tape. Once back to original form I wrapped it in duct tape. This is all outside the box so when you reinstall it all you see is the inside of the original box. Seems pretty strong.
I used the plastic box on my 65 and the steam tray pan on my 67. It all works decent.
