I just got a set of headlight bezels from 4wheel dirve hardware. I talked to them and they said It would fit a 70 cj-5 even though it said in the catalogue it fit late 70 models....They Don't Fit. The set screw hole does not line up with the headlight buckets and they are not even the same shape. The new one is a larger diameter. All I can say the new one has in common with the original is....they are both round. I have searched for other posts about this but I don't see anything. I guess I could have the old ones re-chromed, but I would rather just buy new ones. Can anyone help?

Try posting in the wanted to buy section. I'm sure some one on here has a set they will sell you.
I'll look and see what I have too. Not sure I have any with good chrome though.

I ended up triming the mounting ears slightly to get the adjustment holes to line up.

A wanted to buy add here is your best bet.

There's two styles as you found out. You have the earlier style not supplied by the aftermarket.

Ah ha...yep you can get them brand new. I bought one from Kaiser Willy's Auto Supply (I think) for old Nixon.

Go a google search for Kaiser Willys and search their catalogue. It's a PDF and there's no pictures, but they do sell it.

No problem but now I've got a question. Did you notice how many vehicles that bezel fit? Is that correct?

    Bezel, headlight, chrome, w/screw, New,
    SHOW QUALITY...
    1948-51 Jeepster
    1953-69 CJ-3B, CJ5, CJ6
    1946-64 Station Wagon
    1947-64 PU Truck
    1952-53 Aero Passenger
    1957-64 FC-150, FC-170

Oh, and I also saw brand new shiney chrome hubcaps with the W/O emblem on them. Said it only fit Jeepsters (I think) or wagons or something...but not CJ5s. Why wouldn't they fit CJ5s?

I am starting to find out these retailers really don't have a definate year range for these parts. I called back 4wheeldrive hardware to return the later ones I bought. He said they didn't sell any other rings. I threw him for a loop because after I posted this original post, I found one on trailquest.com describing another one as fitting 55-71 cj's. I told him to look up a part #, 649518. He had it but he said it was listed as fitting a cj-3b. I ordered 2 of these at $21 bucks a piece. The guy on the phone was very helpfull and he matched trailquest's price and waived the shipping because I already paid it once.

Note to anyone out there buying from 4wheeldrive hardware. Get the current wrangler catalogue with the vintage catalogue because they have additional items in the new catalogue that pertain to pre 71 cj's that are not in the vintage catalogue. ex: hood hinges, hood latches, etc...

Yet they still send me the Wrangler catalog even after my profile says 1971 CJ-5.

yea, no kidding, when I bought the parts, they put a wrangler catalogue in it....but...like I said, they didn't completely separate the two catalogues. (You would think they would make sure all the parts they have would be in the correct catalogues, right?)

    Sorry for disturbing the tomb.[IMG]

Two styles is right. My headlight bezels/doors are bowl shaped, convex and smooth around the edge--apparently the other style has a sharp edge around where the bulb protrudes and they're thinner.

I think I am describing the early style on my 1968 CJ5. Here's an example of the same... ↓ ↓ ↓

Are these these the ones not available in the aftermarket?

The older ones are readily available from places like Walck's for example.

I may start a thread to determine if the 1971 cj5 used the early style bezel or was there a transition to later style on late '71's. My '71 Ren II has the later style and I have questioned if they were O.E or not. Almost nothing has been changed on this vehicle but you never no what could happen in 46 years.

How long have you had it? Do yours have any wear or old look to them? Lots of times the outside might look really shiny but the hidden side might show the age factor.

The old ones(?)(I think) that I have, I know for a fact have to be removed to adjust the headlight aim. They also appear to be chrome plated zinc, or die cast metal and very thin at that. I was surprised. They may not be OEM though.

The other style bezel has indentations that allow a screwdriver to reach the vertical and horizontal aiming screws.
At least as far as I can tell.

It is very hard to find info on the two bezel/door styles without the right search terms...

I always thought it was an early to intermediate change.......1971 to 1972. I could be wrong. My 71 has/had the old style on it.

There are two styles of headlight rings for CJ5. From '55 throuh '71 which Hellion's photo shows in post#13, and the '72-up intermediates have a ring with a sharp peak. Yes, the later 3B's use the same as the early CJ5/6. Other flat fender CJs use a flatter headlight ring.
The WO hubcaps mentioned in post #9 that fit Jeepsters are for the original Jeepsters build from '48 through '51, a totally different vehicle from the Kaiser and AMC Jeepsters and Commandos from the late '60 through early '70s.
