I did. I found it at ABC Supply on R & 26th streets. Not my favorite place to buy but they were willing to sell the length I needed. Other local places had to order it and had a 20' minimum.

If you're only 40 over budget, you in good shape. I stopped keeping track years ago.:n:

Uh... $40 over budget "this week" I meant to say :D And I just found a set of 16x10 rims I really like on Craig's for a pretty good deal, probably going to have to let those go for now.

Hey Mike did you just weld in bungs on that tubing you got? If so where did you get the bungs? I'm following your lead on making my own. Thanks.

With the 1" .188 wall you can tap the ends to the 11/16 x 18 thread of the stock TREs. This the way I am going. I have the right handed tap, but had trouble getting the left handed tap. My project has been derailed the last few months, but I am getting back to it.

If you want to go the bung route, you can get the bungs with the correct thread at speedwaymotos.com, but you will need tube with 1" i.d. Personally I don't trust my welding skills on steering components.

You can also check the Ruff Stuff Web site, they have tons of cool steering stuff, but its all heavier duty with the GM 1 ton TREs and I am not sure drilling the D30 knuckle holes big enough for the GM 1 ton stuff is a good idea.

MSC supply or Aronson-Campbell are pretty good places to look for oddball stuff like left-handed taps.

Thanks for the tip, the vendor I had ordered from had all of their 11/16 x 18 left handed taps mis-labled, they were actually 11/16 x 28. They weren't very accommodating trying to solve the problem, so I took a break and went on vacation.

I've been sick for a week or so and haven't got much done. But starting to come around so got a little work done.

Picked up some camber wedges. I tried to make some but it didn't go very well :n:

Immediately realized the hole was too small so I remedied that

And since I've been a wood worker for soooo many years I have a natural instinct to rub the area around the hole i just drilled to remove any small wood burs. Not a good instinct when working on metal, even after several of these cuts I can't fight the instinct.

I did get the axle bolted in and the u-bolts all tightened down. Need to trim the u-bolts to length still.

    Then I learned:
    • My shocks are too short
    • The D30 yoke doesn't fit the driveshaft
    • My wheels don't fit over the calipers
Having been sick I was too tired to try and remedy any of those issues. I'm hoping the yoke off my D27 fits on the D30, I'm sure you guys know.

I don't really like the wheels I have, so it's sort of a blessing in disguise, except for the expense of buying new wheels. And it probably needed new shocks anyway.

It took me many sliced fingers to break the habit of brushing chips away with the back of my hand off the drill press.

This should remedy the problem of the wheels hitting the calipers

33x12.5x15. When/if those wear out I'd like to go a little thinner than 12.5".

I over did it today... exhausted.

I started by making a Roadkill style list of things to be done (in no particular order).

And then I ran around town buying parts and pieces. I went to J$W Auto wreckers which has a pretty good pile of early CJ's to grab parts from (but they really want top dollar). I needed some exhaust flanges to connect to my manifolds. Found some pretty nice pieces and think it will save me a ton of time when I do my exhaust next week. They also had a yoke that would fit on my Dana 30 and connect to my driveshaft as is. Which was nice since it was super easy.

The stock Dana 30 yoke on the right, the one on the left fits my drive shaft and u-joint (y)

    It's all connected now.

Then I crossed off 3 other things on the list :shock: so much left to do.

I bolted down my tub which was crazy hard to do by myself. Also the holes I made in the plates when I boxed the frame weren't very generous in size which made it really difficult.

I connected the transfer case to the cross member. I hadn't done that when I took the body lift off since I needed to make a new bracket for it.

And I cut my u-bolts to length on the front axle, they were really long and needed to be trimmed after the axle swap.

Then I sent Jzeber money because he is kind enough to loan me his tie rod reamer tool (y). Oh and I bought 11' of DOM tubing to make my tie rod and drag link out of.

You should ditch the chain on the bumper and get a strap. Chains are deadly and don't like shock loads.

Agreed. But then I have to find a place to store my chain :D

The strap just is so much easier on the one getting pulled and the one pulling. Plus.. to store, roll it up nice n neat, wrap a bungee around it and jam it under passenger seat.

I agree regarding the chain, but I'll deal with the chain later, for now it's a good place to store it. This thing isn't even driveable at the moment.

Started working on making tie rod and drag link. Bought some 1" O.D. .188" wall DOM, some tie rods and a left hand tap.

Chopped it down to length for the two different parts.

Got a left hand 11/16-18 tap and you know, tapped

The DOM is so much thicker and stronger than the stock stuff, the stock stuff is kinda scary.

Here are the two left hand thread sides, I need to go get some jamb nuts.

While I was doing all that the tie rod reamer tool that JZeber was kind enough to loan me showed up. So I did some reaming which was super cool, like back side of the pillow cool. It was also super easy. There are easier things to do in life, like eating donuts, but this was really easy.

Getting close to having the steering all back together and upgraded, looking forward to that.

I can snag this power steering setup for a pretty good deal. It's all out of a YJ. I'm assuming I will fab a bracket for the pump and will need to modify my saginaw setup for the 4 bolt mount. Looks like it needs a pulley. Anything else I need to understand before I pull the trigger on it?
