Working On My Dauntless : Several Questions

    hallo

    the frenchy come back :D:D with questions !!

    this we , i ve started working on my dauntless from a boat (omc) and i ve several questions

    1) alternator

    with internet , i found that my alternator is a prestolite : am i right ???
    but , i don t have the voltage regulator (for me is still on the boat) . is it easy to find ??

    2) fuel pump

    my carburetor is already connect to the pump , but i dont know how to connect it to the fuel tank . must i use the pin with the red or green circle ????

    3) ignition distributor

    where i must connect the distributor "lung" ????
    i ve searched on carb and around , intake manifold , but i didn t see anything

    4) fly wheel

    here is a pic of my fly wheel , is the right one to put a cluctch ???

    i ve seen several clutch on rockauto , the difference is the diameter . if my fly wheel is the right one , which one must i take

    good news , my crankshatft is ok for beraing ( i was almost sure , but with omc parts in front it was hard to be sure at 100% ) , pic without the omc coupling

    On your alternator-yes you need to find the external voltage regulator. Yours is a prestolite. I'd junk it and buy a delco one wire for an early 80s chevy truck and build a bracket for it.
    Fuel pump- change out for a replacement as an old pump probably has a diaphragm that is dry rotted anyhow. They are cheap.
    Distributor lung....or vacuum advance- there should be a small 3/16 or so fitting on your carb to plug into. I've also seen them on the intake.
    Flywheel- looking at pics I'm not sure if it's correct for clutch. It doesn't look machined. I'd probably find a replacement to compare it with. Don't forget to install pilot bushing

    You must use a voltage regulator with that alternator.

    Regarding the flywheel, yes that flywheel is used with a clutch. The flywheel for an automatic transmission (usually called a "flexplate") is very different.

    The relevant diameter is the friction material, the "clutch plate." The bolt holes are in the pressure plate, or "clutch cover" and do not indicate the diameter of the clutch. They are far outside the friction material. I believe you want a 10.5" clutch.

    Distributor advance typically goes to manifold vacuum.

    alternator : ok , found regulator on rockauto

    vacuum = it was that word !!! thank you , i couldn t remind it !!! ok , i ll check more carefully on the intake

    pump : yes , i ll change it or rebuilt it (i ve done it for the hurricane)

    flywheel =

    - it s a normal fly wheel , but there is a lot of grease and dust on it . i ve cleaned it and it s like a fly wheel that never receicved a clutch ou never ran .
    - my measure was to be sure that the fly wheel can receive a jeep clutch without drilling new holes . what is the difference beetween the clutch (diameter )

    I believe your flywheel may be the standard Buick 225 part that is not as heavy as the version used for the Jeep application. Either version will work fine.

    Not sure what carb you have but the stock 2GC carb has a place for the vacuum advance hose. I don't want to disagree with Tim but from what I've seen it does not normally go to manifold vacuum.

    There should be a casting number on the flywheel somewhere. You'll have to remove it to see it. Something like "3234567."

    I don't know about the V6, but in later cars the vacuum advance switches from manifold vacuum when cold to ported vacuum from the carburetor base when hot (for normal operation). Manifold vacuum will probably run better. There is a thermal vacuum switch that normally handles this. The only difference between ported vacuum and manifold vacuum is at idle: ported vacuum is blocked by the throttle plate at idle and goes to zero. This provides lower emissions, but the engine will probably idle better with some vacuum advance.

    With regard to the vacuum: As we have discussed previously on the forum, there is where the original hose connection was made, and what individuals feel is the appropriate place to connect vacuum. From the factory Jeep v6 with R2g carb had a ported vacuum nipple on the front passenger side under the fuel bowl - its hard to see it under there. Just to get it up and running, I'd probably go with the factory ported vacuum connection...at some later point you can investigate if you would prefer manifold vacuum - been discussed on this forum (and many hot rod forums) a lot. Of course, I assume the boat engine wasn't running a different carb or something unusual.

    The Dauntless has the distributor vac advance connected to the ported vacuum on the carb base if it has a Rochester 2G. I've never tried the manifold vacuum, but I believe remember someone on here doing it inadvertently a couple of years ago, it wouldn't run right.

    I recently picked up a marine 225 with what I think is the same flywheel. My is 1.5 inches thick from the ring gear to the step on clutch side plus about 5/16 more on the back side. It is for sure 50#s plus.

    yes , my carb is a rochester 2 barrels


    i am only at the engine chapter !!! :confused: what this will be when i ll work on the t90 chapter = connect the v6 clutch with the t90 4 cyl shaft !!!! :confused::confused::cry::cry::censored::censored:

    If it's a boat flywheel, it may never have been surfaced for a clutch. If it's the same flywheel as an automobile used (compare casting numbers), you could have the flywheel surface machined for the clutch. This is a common operation for an automotive machine shop.

    This should be mandatory reading for anyone that claims to know how to tune a engine.I had a rather heated discussion with some high profile forum members several years back on this subject. Hopefully people will read the article and understand it. mike

    the "sensor" for the starter is going in in the exhaust maniflod ??? on my engine it was like that
