The best way to verify if Riverside and Big Bad Orange are the same or different is to read color chip books from that era. If they have the same code number, they are the same. The exception is Kaiser "updated" numbers, such as Presidential Red from 226 to 326. They are the same color. The other exceptions are your Renegade codes "999" for any of four or five colors. I have access to a body shop paint formula software where I can look up codes, and the mixing formulas.
Jim, That article on the LBJ parade Tuxes is stashed where I used to live 20 years ago, along with lots of my old Jeep stuff. A long shot, but it may have been featured in "Cars & Parts" magazine from the mid to late 1970's

Mike, I have a paint chart that shows Big Bad Orange and Riverside Orange were the same Ditzler paint code, 2114. Another paint chart from AMC that states "3 new colors to be introduced in the 19691/2 year." Big bad orange, Big bad green, Big bad blue.

I think your correct however I found one chart that listed Big Bad Orange as A-2194. Wonder if it was a printing error.

    Guys

First let me say something. I suspect that a lot of the guys know this, but sometimes I am a little slow on the uptake and it was not until last night that it dawned on me who Jim Allen aka "4xwriter" is.
So for you folks that do not know, Jim is a very talented writer that has written a lot of great books about jeeps and there history plus some magazine articles. I have some of his books. Goggle Jim Allen jeeps and you will see what I am talking about. We all owe him a lot for all the work he has done in finding all kinds of information on our beloved Jeeps and keeping there history alive. I think if he says something is so, we can pretty well bet that it is true.

So Jim, here's to you , Thanks

In answer to your question Jim, that picture was taken by Little Bald Mountain in the Big Horn mountains of north central Wy. I live outside of a little town called Parkman next to the Big Horns.

For kicks and grins I went back to that area in 2008 and retook the picture to make the below picture.

I appreciate the kind words, Mike. The learning process never ends so don't always assume I am right in every instance and don't hesitate to challenge any assertion I might make. But bring a lunch and good information when you do, not anecdotes or "Uncle Joe" stories. I try, and try hard, to document what I write and I get better at it every year. Regrettably, the various publishers I work for don't pay any of the research freight and since all of my living comes from writing, and it's not a Tom Clancy wage I assure you, my expenses come out of my paycheck and I cannot pursue all the research threads I would like.

I've always really like the cut of ECJ5 jib. Lotta guys here dig out the documents first and type second, which is always good order when discussing or debating history. I love the discussions on the minutae of the Jeep world. When historical documentation is missing, it's fun and enlightening to listen to knowledgeable people discussing how to logically connect those dots. I don't get to write about or study Jeeps exclusively, but I always feel like I'm visiting home when I do.

I have a old pic that I think came from somebody here on the site that is a picture of a sheet I think to a dealer with a list of options for a R-1 and the cost. One of the items is a ' VDO Plate D5090 and in the next column is "178J. The copy is very bad and you can not see the top of the column to know what that is for but I suspect it is a option number. Example " Safety Package has 970A in the next column.
Don't know if this helps you or not.
If somebody on the site see's this and it is there sheet hopefully they will speak up.
A interesting item on the sheet is the Total Dealer Billing is $2,831 FOB Toledo and the suggest retail is $3,600

    Very cool!

Can you post what you have, or email it direct (PM me)? Bad as it is? I'd like to see the sheet and see if it's data book page or one of the special ordering sheets they sent out to dealer. I have a '70 (and '71 Data book, but there is no Renegade information in them. I know they did put stuff like that in them because I have found some isolated examples.

The "VDO Plate D5090" I think is the SSR&O plate because that happens to be one of the numbers for an R1. I have found it on a couple of Mint Green R1s. I have seen D5017 on a Red R1.

    Here you go

    http://www.hdts.vcn.com/JEEP/R1 OPTIONS.jpg

You can down load it from there. I played around with the contrast and other things a little and it helped. I am sure that you will able to do more things than I can and maybe see a lot more.

Seeing the D5090 is what caught my eye.

Oh to be able to see the rest of those papers! That looks like something that would come in a dealer packet. Certainly isn't a data book page. Good info!

Is Red Misstress still around... I'm looking. And yeas, I meant Orange ( : < )

I spoke to him last year about the cj5 camper poster he has. He would not sell or copy any info from the dealer packet. He said he was willing to sell the R1 n R2 dealer packets though.

I finally made it out to my Jeep this week, and completely forgot to check the SSO plate. I won't be able to make it out there again for at least two weeks.
