If someone wanted to turbo their V6, why re-invent the wheel? Buick ran a rudimentry turbo setup back in 1978 on the Regal, and Chev borrowed it in 1980 for the Monte Carlo. Both engines are the same Buick 231's, but by 1981, they both adopted a computer controls that somewhat complicate swaps, though they are still feasible. The pre-computer controlled engines only had a knock sensor and a simplistic controller to retard timing when knock was detected. These engines had a fair amount of turbo lag, but made tons of mid-range torque (I'd have to look up the figures).
I've played some of these back in the day, and still have the 4bbl intake and turbo from one. I don't have the intake manifold or spark control/distributor any more. Mine originally had an iron intake, but the later ones used aluminum. The intake manifold had a tiny center inlet, about the size of a 198/225 1 bbl carb.
For a street driven Jeep, or fire road type trails, one of these turbo setups would likely work well in an early CJ, and it would be a reletively easy swap. You would need a complete donor package with exhaust manifolds/piping and all. I would not even consider starting with a Dauntless 225 just because of all the fabrication and internal modifications that would be required; Buick already did all the homework on the '78-'80 Regal. We know where that led....

Stop this thread now! I have a complete 3.8 turbo setup. It was buried in the back of steves 71 project. I don't need any more projects!

I would totally be down for a factory 231 turbo motor swap. Can't seem to find one.

I still kick myself for not dropping the $400 my local yard wanted for a severely wrecked (from the rear), but complete, '87 Grand National GNX. Back then, that was insane money to my just-graduated-high-school self. But ohhh, the possibilities.

ITLKSEZ, there was a complete turbo 231 on the Boise Craigslist about a month ago. He only wanted like $250 for the entire lot. I know that's a long drive from Post Falls, but it might be worth a look?

Haha, thanks, but I've moved on. I have a turbo lined up for the (Volvo) engine in my current build.

I just like tempting others to do things I'd like to, but don't have time/money for. :D
