A 30 is simply so much easier to work on.

In what respect? Yes, you don't have to deal with knuckle puddin, but I'd rather deal with grease than scrape oily dirt out of my axle tube for an hour and then install an inner oil seal.

This I wholeheartedly agree with. The open knuckle spindles get contaminated too easily.

Years ago I used to read the ads in the 4 x 4 magazines for custom built Dana 44's to replace the 25/27, along with all of the other goodies of course. Then when I was outside I'd look at the 25 and not see any reason to want to replace it....sure seemed strong enough to me.

Pulling a truly working unit is rough.

I did mine for easier access to parts, FLAPS, an the advantages of mild increase in front width. The strength increase was nice since my front will have some decent weight on it. My unit was also very cheap, and I was going to be doing a full front cleanup anyway.

Decent brakes and real crossover steering can be grafted to the D25.

Got the differential apart. The pinion was completely welded to the bearing. Scrap.
I finally found a complete D25. Shipping may be an issue.

So, is everything scrap or just the pinion?

Just the pinion and related bearings, seals and shims. Everything else is fine.

Setting up the front ring and pinion tolerances isn't near as critical as the rear is. If the ring gear isn't worn out and you could find a good pinion gear it might be worth a shot trying to set it up.

I found that properly setting up a ring and pinion is a very difficult task and takes an amateur like me days of trial and error. I really don't want to do it again. It seems that new 5.38 ring and pinions are not common.
One of our members has a complete D25 front axle that looks good that I'm going to buy.

Yes. Very common to find dana 25 or 27 for almost free.
