A nice 27 is like saying a Yugo has low miles and is in great shape.

As it turns out the front pinion bearing was spun welded to the pinion shaft and had to be removed with a cutting torch and chisel. The housing was saved but everything else was ruined. Hopefully someone will have a good replacement ring and pinion.

Is that what you would call a "lincoln locker"?

Do like someone else mentioned and look for a Dana 30, hopefully with your gear-ratio and disc brakes already installed.

A "Lincoln locker" is where the differential gears are welded together so they can not function as a differential anymore i.e. 100% traction to both wheels.

    Hey, you forgot "rust fee"-----

Personally, I will probably never rebuild or even re-gear another D25 or D27. Money much, much better spent on a NT D30-something considerably more robust and something you can actually buy some relatively beefy aftermarket parts for.

If you've never done a rebuild, you prolly wanna find a whole unit.

Having messed around with a front end that had a pretty bad failer, trust me, get another complete one, freshen it up and slide it under and install. your likely to get the old one all back together and find something else. Dana27's are really pretty darn stout for what they where designed for I've been amazed at how well mine has held up with 32" Swampers and a v6.

I don't get way everyone hates the Dana 25 and 27? Granted you can't get fancy selectable lockers for them, but they are a decent axle. One thing I do really like about them is that they are closed knuckle so there is a lot less seals to worry about. No inner axle seals getting chewed up by mud or spindle bearings blowing out.

Mine held up for 15 years, until i was pulling out a stump, in reverse, with 4x4 engaged. Turns out that is a no-no:whistle::oops:
