Anybody using a metal spacer or shim like used on the old flat fenders, WWII jeeps, behind the drive flanges, on their Warn locking hubs?

My hubs were cleaned and lubed and worked fine on the bench but, when I installed them, they became very tight and hard to turn.....very hard to turn. Wondering if one of those old shims would loosen things up. Or is there some other problem? All of the slider pins/bearings were in good condition as were all the other internal parts. These are the early aluminum Warn hubs that are commonly found on our JEEPs.

Installed on what Jeep? Have you tried loosening them just a bit to see if it takes the tightness off. I haven't had that issue so don't have any real answer.

Did you have the gasket installed too? One of my jeeps had selectro hubs and there were several aluminum spacers behind them.

It's on my '71 cj5.......Dana 27, newly installed Power Lock.

I always used a very light coating of wheel bearing grease and never ever had an issue before. I know a lighter white lithium is preferred but, I've been doing it this way for 30 years almost. Never an issue. I don't load them up with grease. Just a light film.

I did not back off the bolts and try it but, when I installed them, I worked the dial from Free to lock several times as I tightened down the bolts. They got harder and harder to turn as I tightened them.

No paper gaskets. Just silicone sealant, used sparingly.

I'm gonna pull them back off and try to see if anything is messed up. They are both equally difficult to turn.

a power lock will not allow things to move as freely and so might just be an issue of binding. have it in a spot where you can roll it a bit while locking them in. May be a hub tool is what you need International Pickup & Travelall Parts.com

FWIW they are designed to be turned by hand so if a tool is needed then something is wrong.......in this case it certainly sounds like a spacer is needed.

I ran into this problem during my FF install. Once I installed the 2nd hub... Everything worked as intended.
