Started on my spare tire carrier. I am copying one that is on Matt's jeep (mdmeltdown). He purchased his from 4 Wheel Drive Hardware, he got on of the last ones they had. This carrier uses existing holes in the jeep.

There was a redesign on the build part of the way though. Read the whole build for what I did. Working on getting the pictures changed over,

This is a link to a picture of the carrier DSCN1499

    The mounts uses these holes.

The brackets are made from 1/4 inch plate, with a bend and a tab is welded in place

This angle will weld onto the brackets bolted to the frame.

    More to come

Cut the angle, to add a piece of steel for the hinge

    Metal welded back in

Hinge side, Added a piece at top to sandwich the tube steel.

The latch side, there is metal top and bottom of the tube steel. There is a small break in the metal to lift the tube when closing

When I drilled for the hinge bolt and the latch, I tach welded everything together and drill all the peices together, so everything will line up

is the bolt just through the hole or have you thought about adding a bushing or bearing? i would think it may bind up over time or start to egg the hole. Looking good so far.

I added a peice of 1/4 inch plate to the bottom of the tubing and 3/8 inch plate on the inside of the tubiing at the top. The tubing is 1/8 wall or a little thicker. With the plating I added, I have 3/8 thick metal at the bottom and 1/2 inch at the top. Will use a shoulder bolt at the hinge. When the carrier is closed ,it will be resting in the cradle/angle. I figure the carrier will be opened a dozen times a year. If it eggs out, I can take it off rework it.

I decided to redesign the tire carrier. Was a little concerned about the hinge, I figure I could fix in the future if it did not work right, but after talking to Matt, who has the carrier I am copying, I decided to do it right. I got a hinge from A to Z fabrication. The hinge/pivot looks like a small trailer axle and hub. I am keeping the way the carrier mounts to the Jeep.

Looks good............but you might want to think about putting a radius on all those square corners on the plate that's hanging out.......your body parts will be glad you did.

I must be living right. When I was first planing this build, I looked at the pivot from A to Z and did not use it because I was concerned about how long it was. Well tonight, when I bolted the mount up to the frame, I looked the location of the top of the pivot and where the tailgate will be when it is opened. Started to worry. Put the tailgate hinges on and installed the tailgate, there will be about half inch between the top of the pivot and the tailgate when it is opened. It is possible to move the carrier down the mounts, which would have been a fix I would have done. Just a lot of grinding and cutting.

Add the support for the tire. I had a hub from the axle I got a two hole knuckles off of. Took the hub and welded a piece of 4 inch schedule 40 pipe to the back. Notched the pipe and welded the up right tubing to it and welded that to the swing bar. Took some tubing and cut it for gusset/bracing on each side. Will grind down and hit with some bondo to fill in any voids and make it smooth.

I really like the hub idea. I knew a guy that had his spare mounted to an extra working hub assembly.

    Calling the Tire Carrier done..

Added a nylon stop which helped a lot. Arm latches every time

Added a little piece of 1/2 inch rod for a stop, put a piece of pex water pipe over it so there would not be metal on metal

In review, I was glad I went with the new hinge, if I put all my weight 160 lbs on the arm it will move a little down. The nature of the pivot sticking up, there is some defection. I am not concerned about this, since the arm will be locked in place when driving. The arm goes down a little, when latching, it is hitting the top plate.

I do like the mounting design, since the Jeep frame was not modified in mounting the carrier. This Jeep is for show only, probably never see any off-roading. There where a few comments about storage for gas cans. This could be a challenge, with the Jeep being narrow and not wanting to block the tail lights. I did a lot of designing while building, which can have its draw backs. I am not happy with the way the nylon stop is mounted, but should be fine for me. Enjoy
