My wife has been complaining about needing a step to help her get into the Jeep. She's only 5'1" and I must confess it's not getting any easier for me to get in the Jeep anymore. So, I pulled off my rocker guards and bent up a couple of pieces of 1 1/4" tubing, slapped on a couple of pieces of expanded steel, a lot of Gloss Black paint and voila'.

Wish I could have dropped them down even further but I didn't want to create a hang-up point below the actual slider. Thanks for the compliments, guys. I went to Rubicon Springs over the weekend and I managed to keep all that shiny new paint on them, even coming up Cadillac Hill which has a couple of tight squeezes between some big rocks. On a more somber note, I managed to poke a hole in one of my Krawlers and had to put on the spare. I'm hoping it can be repaired well enough to be my new spare tire. Fingers crossed. We got a ton of rain last week and there are a lot of mud holes and I may have speared the tire on a submerged tree limb of something.

Are your sliders only mounted on on the side of the body, or do you have any kind of mount on the underside of the slider? From the pics it looks like they are only mounted through the side of the body and I assume have substantial backing plate of some type on the inside of the tub.

    thanks - looks good

The mount is very sturdy for the rockers. I've beat the bottoms of them pretty hard without issue.

I'd like to copy it (maybe not the step bars yet) - was trying to see if you have any mounting through the floor or on the underside. In a couple of the pics - the slider on the right has a piece of tubing or something that is probably just there to hold it up on the concrete and not part of the slider, but couldn't tell for sure.

Are they 3/16" 90degree angle iron basically and bolted through the side of the body? I like the triangular piece that gives some lateral protection - looks like they come out about an inch from the vertical side of the body?

    thanks

Nice job on those, Focker. To answer your question, James, I used 3" x 3" x 3/16" angle and they are only bolted through the body. Plenty strong enough for me. They have been on for nearly 6 years with a lot of hard trail use and I've had no problems with them tweaking the body.

thanks - If its strong enough for your use it will be more than enough for me.

I tried making some last summer using some scrap 2x2 angle iron (3/16"), I didn't really like how they came out and never used them - the major issue being one of them wasn't quite true and had a slight outward bow which I thought would warp the body. That is what you get with scrap iron, but was a good practice project to begin developing some skills. I added some extensions on the bottom side thinking it might need some underside mounts, but had trouble dealing with the the gap from the recessed floorboard (as compared to the edge). I might think about Focker's method with dual nuts, or might just skip entirely like Posi. I think using 3" high on the sides will help provide more lateral strength (and I think it looks better) and also provide room for larger backing plates at the mount locations - 2" height doesn't provide a lot of mounting options on the inside of the tub. And while my 2" ones would have provided some direct protection for the edge, I couldn't figure out a good way to create the lateral width for a bit of side protection. I thought about trying what you guys did with angle iron, but wasn't sure my welding skills were up to it at the time. Thinking I could do it now. Lots of winter projects!

James, if I were going to do these over again I think I'd use 4" angle just to bring the protection up a little further. Although with the new bars I don't think it would matter.
