so... I have a 64' CJ5 with a 4-134. It has been dying at speed. When I accelerate, she goes, but then will die. She loses all power. I pump the throttle a little bit and she fires back up. I took the head off and the gasket and everything looked OK. (old). Replaced. The radiator water is super brown and low. Any suggestions or experience with this issue? Thanks

Do you mean it coughs and sputters, stumbles, quits for a few seconds? At what speed? Around town speeds, closer to highway speeds? Could be carburetor, fuel filter, ignition related maybe. Have you had any work done on any of that? Brown water = rusty. No antifreeze or rust inhibitor. Needs flushed obviously and the proper mixture of coolant. Low? Have you checked for leaky hoses, water pump, radiator? You replaced the head gasket so are you sure it's not leaking?

If the fuel line is plugged with crap in the tank, it will run fine until maximum load is demanded, such as high speed or a long hill. Then it will stall out but restart as if normal.

Try blowing out the line fom the fuel pump end, but the real fix is to drain and clean the tank. Alternatively if you have an in-line fuel filter, that may be clogged.

If the gas cap vent is restricted a similar syndrome can be experienced.

well she doesnt go very fast but the first couple times it was in the foothills so probably +/- 30mph. no sputtering, just quits. The other day I test drove her around the block, maybe a 1/4 mile and she did it 6 times at no more than 15mph. RPM were probably consistent in both cases, 2200. The reason i brought up the water, is that she usually keeps it full and clean. so... you guys are leaning to fuel. Copy. I have a janky solex on her that is about 7 yrs old now. Also, took her in the mud/water for the first time this last spring. She might have gotten water somewhere??

Is your cooling water issue only after you replaced the head gasket? When your engine is cold unhook your fuel line to the carburetor and turn the engine over pumping gas into a safe container so you can examine the gas and check for fuel pump flow. Unhook the coil wire to the distributor cap so it doesn't start.

How long have you had the Jeep? Is this a fairly new problem?

When the engine quits, can you smell gas? What is the condition of the fuel lines? Older rubber lines will crack and, while not leaking fuel out, will allow air to enter the system. Finally, when was the last time you did a complete tune-up with points, condenser, plugs and wires?

Smell gas, no. the carburator is quite wet though. last tune up was maybe 6 yrs ago. about 1000miles. she only has 14k original miles. I will go through the fuel system when I get home. Im hoping its something like what you guys brought up because im trying not to put too much money in the motor; 302 in the garage almost done :)))

    New filter maybe.
Get a hand pump for tires and hook it up to the line in the engine compartment that goes to the pump. you want to blow back through the line from the tank to clear anything out of it.
Also if you have an original equipment gas pump, it might be getting ready to quit on you. I had one go bad, and when it did the poor old JEEP acted like the carb was giving out.
I bypassed the mechanical pump with an electric one from Mr. Gasket.
Haven't had any problems with the fuel system for more than 5 years now.
