I started looking around for electric brakes for a M-416. Basically what I found is no one makes a backing plate with a 6 bolt (2" centers) pattern. They are either 4 bold or 5 bolt. I need to tear down one side of the axle and see it the existing spindle is welded or bolted. I thought maybe the military would opt to make the axle spindle repairable. If it's welded then I will need to build a new axle.

One nice thing is I found 10" electric brakes w/parking brake capability. I've been waiting on a call back from the ebay seller, they sell a build you own axle kit, and I need them to quote a price using the hand brake backing. The current kit costs $199 and the axle schedule 40 tube is $50.

Got a call back, bottom line is he can build the axle I need and ship it complete for $360. Not bad,
I'm going back to a local trailer shop tomorrow and see what they can do, previously they stated complete axle just under $300 but without the parking brake featureo_O...(but I specifically stated I want the parking brake??? but they said no, not anymore.) So, I can get the backing plates complete minus drum from online $120 and have them do everything else..... it depends on how much they drop the price for not using their backing plates, as long as it isn't more than $240 I'll be alright.
    we'll see how it goes.

The military made some M416's with a surge brake, most went to the USAF...

I have two 5KW generators on trailers w/surge brakes. I looked at them, the surge feature is rather large and would require a complete hitch remake. also the trailer axle is too wide, although a D44 rear axle w/ 11x2 drums and ebrake would work, but I don't have one.

The local shop wanted $270 without the backing plate, so it looks like I'm going with the shop in Seneca Il.

So while I wait I guess I'll start rewiring the trailer w/7pin connector, new lights and metal covers, and maybe clean up some rust.

I called back to R-and-P-Carriages-Trailer-Sales in Seneca Il., and ordered my axle with parking brake, and after writing everything up they quoted $321.? I said ok and the axle is in production. So hopefully, before the snow flies, I'll have my new axle installed and ready to go for next years trip to the desert.(y)

I decided to change the tail lights on the trailer. On interstate 40 between Phoenix and Blythe, the trucks fly thru there, and more than once I saw the truck coming up behind me and started saying "change Lanes, change Lanes, CHANGE LANES" and at the last second they would lay on the horn and fly around, Military light are hard to see. So A new set of L.E.D. tail lights and a set of heavy gauge light guards are definitely on the menu. And if you look closely you will see the trailer with surge brakes.

Rinse and repeat on the other side. Remove old axle and install new one. But unfortunately even thought I put new springs and U bolts on just two years ago, these look really bad, so tomorrow I'll go to my local trailer shop and buy new ones.

Backing plates are on and so are the drums, brakes are wired but not tested yet. Here is the problem.....

The rims are designed to use the hub on the drum for center (painted blue in the pix) the lug nuts have a flat back and simply hold the rim on. Not like most rims that have a bevel to mate with lug nut. The studs on the old hubs were 7/16ths, on the new hub their 1/2, thats not a problem because the rim has 1/2" holes, but no bevel. my question is, if I took a larger drill bit and cut a chamfer around the holes, do you think that might keep the rim centered? Other Ideas?
I thought about having someone with a water Jet cutter make a disc, that would fit snugly in the rim and have a center hole the size of the new drum

Trailer is all finished, for now, still need to fix two wires underneath.

And then on to the camping conversion.
To that end, I just bought a tent trailer from craigslist. The canvas is shot but it has many little items I can use, and it has a title

Oh! I forgot, I used a 43/64ths drill bit and put a chamfer on each hole, seems to have worked, I'll know if it worked when I take it for a road test.

Would you be interested in selling your old axle. I just built a wide utility trailer, and now I want to build a Jeep width one, for behind my CJ6. Let me know.

Not to be Anal about this , but that could be a touchy subject.......with a Normal Drill bit angle at about 59 degrees +/- vs a standard lug nut at 60 degrees. A proper tool such as a single flute countersink turned at a slow speed after centering , clamped and adjusted to the proper depth would have been a better choice than a drill bit to correct the angle...........
Just continue to monitor the torque and after some running time you may want to inspect the witness mark the Lug nut counter sink leaves on the wheel.

Since I am going to the Bantam Jeep Festival, I need to fix up the trailer a little bit. When I travel cross country I sleep in the trailer, I have ends that clamp into place when sleeping. But when I get to a campsite, I setup differently, and it is this setup on which I am going to work.
To start with I am adding stabilizer legs. A pair of 17" legs was $26 on Amazon, 19" legs were $30 ea. and I need something 22" long. So I bought the cheap ones, cut the foot off and added 6".

Now I need to get the trailer out of the backyard and onto the driveway to continue working. When I do I'll get pix with the ends in place.

So here we are with the end in place, the end has screen plastic and inside blind. It's nice for on the road.

Got a little bit more done. I love having the extra 10 gal of gas but it makes the trailer sway, just like the spare tire did. So I'm removing the swing out tire carrier, but I'm going to use the mount to add a swing out stove and sink.

It doesn't look like much but I'm getting there. I hope to complete the box this weekend.
