Got my new Tom Woods custom driveshaft today.
It is nicely made. It's worth the 379 bucks shipped to my door. It came greased with new Ujoints ready to bolt in.

This is my old driveshaft I made out of old junk cobbled together.
It worked ok and was fine for mock up and shakedown. Its almost good enough for everyday use and if the splines weren't wore out, or it was off road only it would have been fine.

Tom told me to use 8 degree shims for correct pinion angle with the CV driveshaft. You can see i have installed those.

Bolts right up to the flange.

It was perfect out of the box.

I drove it around and all the driveshaft noise is gone as expected, but...

The clack when I push in the clutch is still there. Its the gears in the transfer case. I will have to live with it. Its annoying, but at least I know its nothing i have done or can do to remedy short of going dana 300 and centered D44. I am sure many of you do not have this problem, but I do.

The adapter from sm420 to D18 is now leaking quite a bit of oil since I changed out the small hole D18 to the large hole d18 and used Novaks adapter for the adapter. It went together real tight and now it leaks. Only way to fix it is to drop the transfer case again. I will do that when I either run the transfer case out of oil or get bored and need a task.

"ya' know Dan....it's like my grand pappy used to always tell me. He said 'Rosanne Rosanna Danna,...it's always something"

That driveshaft looks awesome. Good deal. Are the shims steel or aluminum?

Steel. They were like 32 bucks shipped from amazon. Guess I should have painted them.

Just curious. I've heard tales about the aluminum ones breaking.

Alum does have a fatigue limit, but it depends on the amplitude of the stress as to how many cycles it can endure. If properly designed and manufactured it can last a long time.

To be fair, I've had steel shims break too. But I don't think those monsters are going anywhere.

Most of the aluminum ones I've seen are cast aluminum........we send them beer cans they send back shims that don't last.........billet aluminum shims out of 6061-T6 or better yet 7075-T6 and they last forever.

An old machinist once told me DONT MAKE IT IF YOU CAN BUY IT. Good advice I have often ignored. Now no worries about kids in back being dismembered.

That really is a nice shaft. I'm jealous of how long your jeep's shaft is. Wait. That came out wrong.

That might be a necessity on my project. I'm going to have a crazy angle and short shaft. I so hate spending money.

I hate speeding money too, but this shaft is worth it. Its really nice. I don't mind spending money when it comes to my house custom and perfect.

When I got my tow bar, I bought some adapters, that just have big pins that go through my recovery points, can't remember where I got em, but a heck of alot more beefy than the little pins that came with the towbar....

Got my jeep up to like 55 today. Its got plenty of power, certainly not an issue, but no speed limits above 40 close by unless i go to where everyone is driving 80. Not where i want drive this heap. The driveshaft makes no noise and zero vibration at speed. Quiet as can be and I am completely satisfied with it. I thought I was spending a lot of money. Its not. I also got mailed some catalog for bolt on JK stuff and some hard parts. They want like 600 bucks for a similar driveshaft in there. sheesh. no way. Its not even custom. Go buy your driveshafts from Tom Woods.

No and yes. On the one hand its done, works perfectly and is completely reliable and on the other hand I can't believe its been a whole year.

One of the strangest things is how everything works so well. I mean, driving down the road, it tracks straight, returns to center and nothing is quirky except the 3rd gear synchro. The other day some dumb person cut me off. My brakes were smooth and predictable, the front end didn't dive and everything was safe enough to do my usual yelling of expletives and gesticulating wildly.

There is zero problems with the frame, or the quick and dirty engine rebuild, the D18 refresh or driveshafts. I have been driving it just about every day the weather is suitable for open top too in inner city conditions.

Thank you for paying attention to my silly project.

The "Photobucket Hotlink Fix" extension for Google Chrome solves the photobucket issue.
