    It isn't a 1973 Jeep Frame. Its a 1976 -1983 cj5 Frame.

It may be titled as a 1973 but it isn't. Everything you need to buy will be for 1976 and newer. Whats the dash look like?

Definitely '76 or later. A '74 frame is open C-channel, parallel from the front to the back.

Nice Jeep, but it's not a '73 or '74. Again, '76 or later. What is the VIN?

    Which engine and transmission?

Its a 1976-1983 cj5 re-titled as a 1973. Everything you posted is a dead giveaway. Don't buy anything for 1975 on down. Nothing will fit.

Thanks I am new to the jeep world.
thanks for your input. I am new to this world and trying to learn what I can. It seemed really solid and thought it was a good deal. One more thing was wondering what engine was in it. I found 401 stamped on the block. Is that a dead give away that it is a 401?

if it's Cast into the block with raised letters that is what it is.

If you ever do go to sell this jeep you need to be forthright about the year discrepancy. The Jeep definitely has had a Vin Swap which really is a pretty big NO NO. You do not want something like this coming back to Bite you in the ***.

Could that body have been set on that frame? When I did a bin search for the year. The vin on it came up 73.

No, the later body will not fit on the earlier frame. It has nothing '73 about it other than the VIN.

More likely the VIN plate from a '73 was attached to a later Jeep and the title comes from the Jeep the VIN plate came from. Be careful here, because the Jeep could be stolen, have liens against it, or it could have been a dodge to get around the emissions laws. Transferring titles to other vehicles is not allowed in any state.

Not sure about the later Jeeps, but before 1976 the sequential serial number part of the VIN is stamped into the frame, on the top of the frame near the right front shock mount. This number should match the VIN. If it does not, it confirms that the title is not right and may give you a clue for what the original title was. There are also date-of origin clues on the engine, the axles and the light lenses. Note also that a CJ never came with a 401 from the factory, so that has been swapped in. The 401 is a desirable and increasingly scarce engine, and can have significant value on its own. I'd expect a reputable seller to bring this up, since the 401 is quite a desirable engine. Maybe it has issues - they overheat if naively rebuilt.

76 serial numbers are on top of the right rear frame about even with the back tire.

Thanks for the info. Yea I did know the 401 did not originally come in them. Think the Wagoneer was the only one with 401.
