Yes, you're right. I was raising the driveline to limit the spacers under the crossmember to increase ground clearance. I ended up with 1/8" worth of spacers and not much clearance between the transmission and tub in several places.

I got to crawling around underneath my rig tonight to try and figure out what is different in your case. We have different transmissions, but I suspect they are close to the same size and the cover on mine is in front of the gas tank so I don't have the same interference problem. I concluded it must be the input shaft length on the transmission. The SM420 input shaft is a bit shorter, hence why I couldn't use the stock bellhousing

Thanks for looking. My M38A1 has a 17 gallon tank under the seat. A smaller tank would make it a lot easier to trim around the tranny but I don't want to give up 7 gallons.

Don when I did my T98 behind the FHead in my 67 I didn't have the issue with the 17 gallon tank, but I did have to trim the floor and make a new floorpan. There is a point where the drivers side rear corner of the T98 meets the floor and the corner of the gas tank. Its a little tricky getting the floorpan modded to get along with everything but it is doable. When I did the SM420 in my flattie with the 4.1 Buick I used CJ black rubber body mount bushings. They are an inch thick and there are 2 different diameters. I used 2 of the smaller diameter bushings under the radiator and the larger diameter ones for the body. It surprised me how much of a difference 1 inch made in the whole scheme of things. You're almost there- the first time you hit the trail with it it'll all be worth it.:)

Thanks, Mike. When you installed the T98 behind the fhead, did you have to move the nipple for the clutch torque tube back a few inches?

I used an old AA chain clutch setup that I had so I didn't use the original tube. I suppose you would have to fab that in. Now that I think about it, wouldn't that mean you would need the cable to be longer as well?
I just hooked up both ends of the AA setup and then pulled the bracket holding the sprocket back untill the chain got tight, drilled the holes in the frame and bolted the bracket on and was done.
Another option might be to just make your own chain/sprocket setup. If I recall, Pielut made his own chain setup using a motorcycle chain and a sprocket. You would have to fab a simple mount off of the frame for the sprocket but I think that's it.
Oh, and I remembered that you needed pics of the cable entering the bell housing... I'll get those up tonight.

Moving the tube back shouldn't be too difficult. Unbolt the existing, drill 2 holes and reinstall...and yes, the cable will need to be a little longer. Still thinking on that one. Is there a reason cable is used and not a stiffer rod?

My A1 came with a tiny 10gal tank from a CJ2 or something... I had to have the original style for the extra 7 gallons... It's worth it to me

I used the stock cable and added length using a coupler and a rod threaded on both ends. You could probably use a length of all-thread to make it easier. IMG_20160429_203215-1.jpg IMG_20160429_203250-1.jpg

I managed to get 9 of the tub mounting bolts off today. Considering they've been on there for over 60 years and I didn't have anyone to hold a counter wrench I'm not too frustrated. Broke 4 or 5 of them in the process. I think they're out of warranty.

Don, I need to do the same thing before I head to the hills. It had never crossed my mind to take a look at these until I saw your post. Glad I did. I think about 50% of my fasteners are missing. I can't believe I missed this. Thanks!!!!

BTW, I was close to your area this past week. My mother-in-law is in the USC hospital in LA. Victim of an endoscopy gone badly. The docs almost killed her. Same thing happened to my wife during an endoscopy in a different part of the body and things were touch and go with her, too. I saw a lot of terra firma in your area I would love to try tearing up in my jeep. Later...

Sorry to hear about your MIL but those of us in SD don't regard LA as our area. :D

I was told that there exists a mount specific to T98s. I also used spacers.
I had a huge problem because I have a fiberglass body and everything is thicker than sheet metal. I had to lay up a fiberglass tranny cover because none of the metal ones I had around would cover everything. After working on the cover for days, I realized that the gas tank would not clear the cover and tranny, even with blocks. So then I had to have the corner of the gas tank cut off.

What have those with T98s used for a tranny mount to the cross member/

The T98 factory option included a modified cross member that had the bracket attached to the cross member. The cross member I acquired had the bracket but the cross member itself was not usable. I cut the bracket off and had it welded to another cross member.

Things have snowballed. I've decided to do a body lift to gain clearance. I had to cut out a small section of floorboard in the passenger side front because of a small rusted area that a bolt goes through. I found some bad hat channel so I'm going to pull the tub off to check the rest and repair as needed.

I have all of the body bolts and fenders off along with the wiring disconnected. Made me think, as long as the tub is pulled, I might as well pound out some of the trail battle scars and do a rattle can paint job. I'm going to do most of the sanding before I actually pull the tub. I started that process today.

I'll probably replace half of the wiring while I'm at it. Aren't you glad you asked, Mike?

Ha Ha boy do I know that feeling! I have a shop full of snowballs. My most recent snowball is a 47 2A. Its right at home with the other snowballs. The biggest snowball of all is the one that starts with " Maybe I should get another Jeep...":)

In the end, you'll be glad you started the snowball rolling cause your Jeep will be better than before, thereby keeping the old iron rolling down the road and trail. And that, is why we do it.:)

Keep us posted, we'll live vicariously through your snowball.:)
