I have installed a Saginaw steering gear as you can see in the pix above, which was taken early on in the restoration/modification stage, but I have a couple of questions about it. There was no leakage on the steering unit until it got warm and the sun was shining on it. It appears that when it gets hot, the oil is forced out through the seal around the steering shaft, but I put some oil in it when it was cold and it seemed to leak out on its own. How full should the unit be? I couldn't find a quantity anywhere in here or elsewhere. It's kind of a job to pull it, so I don't want to if it was leaking just because it was too full and/or it was hot. Let me know what you all know. Thanks and have a great weekend.

Hot from what...Just the sun or driving/use?

Sounds like a bad seal. Mine doesn't leak...It's full and it sees temps over a 100°F in the summer.

Thanks. That was my way of thinking, but before I went through the problem of pulling it, I wanted the opinions of the learned wizards in here. My jeep is down right now anyway. Seems that the ignition switch stuck between RUN and START and kept the pinion engaged with the flywheel. Toasted the starter. I have been too busy to order one. Do you have a favorite supplier? I have used a few with varying successes for each. Some seem to do better than others in some things and the others do better in other things. I am learning...

It's not power steering -- just a manual Saginaw. Anyone know where I can order a necking knob? Are they illegal now? They have to be available somewhere. The gear ratio makes it feel like power steering, but don't try to make any quick moves with it. It isn't going to happen...

    Have a great weekend, ok?

In answer to your last question, hot from the sun. It feels smooth as silk in use, but don't want to ruin it from lack of lube.

n6ifp and Mcruff, thanks... I will check it out. I am sure they are illegal in Calif., but I am running an illegal carb anyway, so what do I care?

    Later....

Maybe I can color coordinate (LOL). I was looking for a new steering wheel cover and on my first stop, I found a black leather cover with orange stitching. It was obviously a natural. Didn't look any further. Bought it and installed it. Feels and looks great.

Since I live in the Central Valley, you can bet on it!! Good luck on your frame up restoration.
